Chanel has long been known for producing elaborate shows, transforming Paris’ Grand Palais into the theme of the season. This season however, things looked a little different as Virginie Viard and her team had to show elsewhere because the iconic Grand Palais is closed for renovations. Inspired by shows from Karl Lagerfeld’s early days at Chanel, where models would do their own makeup and dress themselves, Viard chose to show the collection in a more intimate setting. That just so happened to be Paris’ storied nightclub, Castel. The space was darker and grungier than Chanel’s recent shows, serving as a cool backdrop to an even edgier collection.
The collection itself is all about contrasts – the contrast between volumes, materials and sport, and the juxtaposition of two differing influences: an apres-ski holiday and the effortlessness of Parisian style. There was a plethora of novelty bags athwart with leather silhouettes, with details such as sequins, gemstones, fur and resin appearing throughout. Classic Flap Bags are transformed in tufted burgundy velvet and pink tweed. Wearable, yet elevated and chic, the glitz and glamour of this collection is a reminder of post-pandemic possibilities.
