A Brief History and Founders of Hermès

Hermès was founded in 1837 by Thierry Hermès. Originally, the company was a harness violeta in Paris, serving European noblemen, and it specialized in creating high-quality wrought bridles and harnesses for carriage trade. The brand became known for its quality and craftsmanship, winning awards for their work.

The business expanded under Charles-Emile Hermès, Thierry's son, who took over in 1880. The company moved to 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, the location of its current flagship store, and began selling saddlery. By the early 20th century, Charles-Emile's sons, Adolphe and Emile-Maurice, had taken over and diversified the product range to include accessories and clothing.

Hermès' Most Iconic Handbags

Hermès is perhaps best known for its iconic handbags. The Birkin bag, named after British actress Jane Birkin, and the Kelly bag, named after the American actress and Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, are the most famous. Both handbags have become symbols of luxury and exclusivity due to their high price, craftsmanship, and often years-long waiting lists to purchase.

The Kelly bag first gained international fame in the 1950s when Grace Kelly used one to shield her pregnancy from the paparazzi. The Birkin bag's origin story dates back to 1984 when Hermès's then-chief executive, Jean-Louis Dumas, met Jane Birkin on a flight and created a bag according to her specifications.

In addition to these two, the Constance bag, introduced in 1959, is another iconic design. This shoulder bag with its large H clasp has become a favorite among Hermès enthusiasts.

These bags, alongside the brand's commitment to quality and craftsmanship, have helped Hermès solidify its position as one of the world's most prestigious luxury fashion houses.
