The 45th edition of the London Marathon, the third Abbott World Marathon Majors race of the season, took place on Sunday 27 April. Although England’s capital was blessed with perfect conditions for spectators, the warm weather was perhaps a little too much for some runners as they wove their way from Greenwich to The Mall.

The woman’s field was left a little depleted on Sunday morning, with marathon world record holder Ruth Chepngetich and reigning London Marathon champion Peres Jepchirchir withdrawing before the race. However, it was a fantastic day of racing that saw Tgist Assefa break the women’s-only marathon world record and Sabastian Sawe impressively pull away to win the men’s race in only his second marathon.
