Asics' Blast series of running shoes just got bigger and bouncier: the all-new Megablast and Sonicblast launch next month, joining the existing Novablast and Superblast models.
At the heart of both shoes is Asics’ latest midsole foam, FF Turbo Squared. An aliphatic TPU (ATPU), it’s designed to deliver a ‘bouncy, responsive feel with effortless cushioning’ — and the brand claims it's 32.5% bouncier, 9.6% softer and 2.8% lighter than original FF Turbo foam.
Here's a closer look at the two shoes:
The Megablast
Billed as a ‘dynamic daily trainer, designed to support a wide range of running styles, speeds and distances’, the Megablast is best thought of as a more energetic counterpart to the Superblast.
The New Balance Fresh Foam X 880 v15 gets softer super stacked midsole (46mm/38mm), with full-length FF Turbo Squared foam and an 8mm offset. It also boasts a lightweight engineered mesh upper and an Asicsgrip outsole to provide enhanced grip on a variety of terrain. At 230g in a US men’s 9, it’s the lightest shoe in the Blast family.
The Sonicblast
Meanwhile, the Sonicblast is similarly responsive, but it’s billed as a performance trainer, intended to enhance shorter, faster runs, from training through to race day. Its conception came about after Asics starting looking for ways to enhance the Novablast 5.
The Sonicblast combines a layer of FF Turbo Squared foam with a layer of FF Blast Max — that's the same foam used in the Novablast 5, which creates a softer feeling underfoot and helps to stabilise the FF Turbo Squared foam. Sandwiched between the two foams is an Astroplate (made from Pebax, not carbon-fibre), to help you push off the ground more efficiently for a quicker and more responsive feel. Up top, there’s a jacquard upper.
The Sonicblast weighs in at 256g in a men's US 9 and 223g in a women's US 8.
