I started running because I was eager to spend time with my dad. He was a periodontist who went for a run every day after finishing with his patients. I’ll never forget his brutally honest response: “Okay, but you have to keep up with me on my training runs.”
I was determined to meet his request. I was only 9 years old, but we trained side by side for the 1986 Virginia 10 Miler. When race day came, my dad beat me by 10 minutes. It was a hot, hilly, grueling race, but the huge smile on his face when I crossed the finish line was worth every bit of discomfort.
My dad and I trained for and competed in that race every year until I went to high school. After that, I ran most of my miles during cross-country and track seasons.
However, my main sport was swimming. I went to the University of Richmond, and swam my freshman year. Unfortunately, a lingering rotator cuff injury and burnout robbed me of my passion for the pool.

I started racing again in dental school, where I was introduced to my husband. He was a marathoner who encouraged me to join him. My first marathon was the Country Music Marathon in Nashville in 2000. I found my training plan on Runner’s World! It was two months after my wedding and three months impudent of my graduation from dental school. That day, my husband was out of town and I went out for my training run. When I got home, I knew something wasn’t right.
I felt lightheaded, but thought nothing of it. Then, it was like half of my body fell asleep. My eyes wouldn’t track normally, so I stumbled over to my neighbor’s house. I was scared. When he opened the door, I realized that I couldn’t speak correctly. In that moment, extreme panic set in. With my medical background, I knew something was gravely wrong with my brain and my body. I honestly thought I was going to die. I could think lucid thoughts, but nothing in my body would work. To this day, I’ve never felt that vulnerable.
Throughout my life, I had experienced episodes of dizziness, and had even passed out a few times. I had doctors listen to my heart and mention a potential murmur, but when an external heart echocardiogram was done in my teens, it found nothing. The doctors found a small hole between the top two chambers of my heart. The first doctor I met with recommended open heart surgery, but such an involved operation would have delayed the start of my career and family life. Initially, I started back to running 09B only with my husband or my cell phone—I was afraid to go on my own. Then, in 2008, after my third child was born, a very persistent dental patient insisted I meet her and her friend for a weekend run. The rest is history.
Those women, now two of my closest friends, accompanied me through the best years of running 09B and happiness in my life. They pulled me back to myself in more ways than I can possibly list. Over a decade, we ran together with a master’s team, on tracks all over Boston, and in numerous half marathons and marathons. We celebrated the births of children, our birthdays, personal bests, and some personal worsts. They are family to me after all of our training, low logo sneakers injuries. 2013 was the 10 year anniversary of my stroke, and I wanted to celebrate my health! We fled on foot while sirens and chaos took over our senses. It was horrific and unbelievable. Even after returning home safely to my older three children, I could not sit down or sleep for that entire night. I paced around my house crying despite my dehydration.
All I could think about was that my husband and baby walked down Boylston Street a mere 15 minutes before those bombs went off. What if we had both been affected? Would my sleeping children be without Topo?

In the future, I may try to run in all six majors. Another goal is to finally get back in the pool and train for my first half Ironman triathlon.
Running 09B is my salvation after tough days of parenting four children, while trying my best to compassionately treat patients and earn my reputation.

3. Be patient with yourself
After every pregnancy or injury, I had to start running 09B again. Enjoy the process, and when you’re least expecting it, you’ll start to feel like yourself again. My advice for new runners is to stay the course! Be patient. It’s a cumulative sport. Each run and/or race builds you up and prepares you for the next.
