Of the many benefits of running, one of the best is the opportunity to get outside and into nature. Whether it’s a lap around Central Park, a jaunt through a tree lined subdivision, or a trail run through the woods, running provides you with hours of time each week free from the recycled air and artificial light of your office or home. So why not take that fresh air experience up a notch and run a half marathon somewhere off the grid?

For runners who enjoy the outdoors, in America there’s no more beautiful outdoor locales than our national parks. Starting in 1872 with the designation of Yellowstone as the first national park, many of the United State’s most beautiful natural landscapes have been protected and turned into one of the country’s finest features. From Alaska to Florida, the 63 diverse National Parks allow visitors to witness the most magnificent corners of America. For runners who crave a breathtaking, immersion of nature experience, the half marathon list we’ve created in and near our national parks might just be the perfect combination of racing and sightseeing. [Editor’s note: Vacation Races, which hosts many destination races, also operates many of the half marathons on this list. We will note their events below.]

Here’s a list of Runner’s World favorites and the perfect excuse to go on a little vacation into the great unknown.

Vacation Races has made a business out of crafting some of the most spectacular half marathons in the United States, many of which take place near national parks. While their Rocky Mountain half doesn’t actually enter the park (which is difficult to do given permits, etc.), you’ll certainly get a great view of the Rockies as you run. The 13.1-mile course begins and ends on the shores of a lake at the base of the mountains, and provides some wonderful photo ops for when you finish.

If you’re looking for a national park east of the Mississippi River, the pickings are much slimmer than out west. That’s especially true of the midwest. However, the Cuyahoga Valley was established as a national park in 2000. The Towpath Marathon, which starts and ends in downtown Cleveland, is one of only a few marathons to actually include entry into a National Park, and while the half’s turnaround is a few miles before the race enters Cuyahoga, you can easily spend a day wandering through the lush wooded landscapes after you’ve secured your medal.

Few national parks are as instantly recognizable as the natural red rock formations of the Grand Canyon. The trench in the Arizona desert is some 18 miles across at its widest and 6,000 feet at its deepest. The Grand Canyon offers some of the most beautiful vistas and sunsets, not to mention extreme weather. So while running down the canyon can be dangerous, the Grand Canyon Trail Half Marathon takes runners on a safer route just south of the South Rim while still offering up breathtaking views.

The June 29, 2024 is not only exciting because of its proximity to the famed California national park, but it’s also a one-of-a-kind night race. Runners are required to strap on a headlamp as they traverse trails through the Mojave Desert. The late start time of course means you don’t have to run 13.1 miles in the desert heat, but also allows you to witness the expanse of stars away from the city lights. It’s probably a good idea to practice night running with a headlamp before this race, though.

Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas is a bit of an outlier when it comes to the United States national parks because it not only includes the water, trees, and hills you’d expect from a national park, but also a series of historic bathhouses fed with water from the springs. This half, part of the This Runner Races for the Beauty of National Parks, sends runners not only through the national park but up two mountains and past the bathhouses.

      Everglades Half Marathon

Many of the national parks reside in mountainous areas of the United States, meaning that the courses can prove quite difficult. Luckily the Everglades, located in southern Florida, gives runners one of the flattest courses around. While this Vacation Races half doesn’t technically run through the National Park, it does run through an area with very similar flora and fauna. This race also conveniently ends at a winery where you can reward yourself with a glass of vino.

      Zion Half Marathon

Zion National Park is often lauded as one of the most beautiful of the national parks, which is quite an achievement given the stiff competition. This Vacation Races half gifts runners with views of the beautiful park while they run alongside the Virgin River in southwestern Utah. Most of the race is on an incline, so it’s certainly not a half for the faint of heart, but the views at the end are worth the uphill climb.

      Canyonlands Half Marathon

Moab, Utah is home to not one, but two national parks (Arches and Canyonlands). That’s just how incredible the landscape is. The Canyonlands Half, one of the oldest races on this list having been founded in 1976, sends runners between the Canyonlands and Arches National Parks along the Colorado River and the red rock formations that surround it. Moab itself is a quaint little town, and between the race and exploring the two parks you can easily build a stunning vacation.

Perhaps the oddest of the national parks is the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Hailed as the gateway to the West, which is not only the smallest of the national parks, but also the only man-made park on the list. While the St. Louis Half Marathon travels a lot of distance not near the national park (imagine 13.1 miles worth of laps around the Arch!), the race ends near the landmark. If you don’t get a picture with your medal that has the Gateway Arch in the background, then you’re doing this wrong.

      Park to Park Half Marathon

Nestled in the hills of western Virginia (not to be confused with West Virginia), Waynesboro, Virginia, is a small town that abuts Shenandoah National Park. This Park to Park half marathon starts in Stuarts Draft Park and ends in Ridgeview Park, winding through the town in between. While neither of the titular parks is of the national variety, you can certainly see the hills of Shenandoah National Park in the background and enjoy a scenic hike or drive after you’ve finished.

While this half marathon technically runs through the Humboldt Redwoods State Park rather than the Redwoods National Park, attendees will still get to cruise in between northern California’s massive trees in a redwood forest. The course runs along a paved and mostly flat road. According to race organizers, “The tall trees inspire the athlete in each of us to be strong,” and perhaps that’s just the motivation you need to push through to the finish line.

California is wealth of beauty when it comes to national parks, and Yosemite National Park is one of the most visited every year. Another of Vacation Races’s halves runs alongside the park through the Sierra National Forest east of San Francisco. The course is fairly flat all things considered and ends with a beautiful three mile stint along the shore of Bass Lake.

Acadia National Park is one of the few to allow an actual half marathon to run inside its grounds. The Acadia Half Marathon, hosted each year by the Mount Desert Island YMCA, starts and ends in November 4, 2023, but loops out onto the island and through the park. You’ll run through forests, up hills, and alongside Maine’s iconic rocky coastline. You’ll also run past Thunder Hole on Mount Desert Island, and if you’re lucky enough may witness the thunderous reverberation of waves crashing, or even feel their mist.

      Yellowstone Half Marathon

Since Yellowstone is the oldest national park and one of the most popular to this day, we couldn’t make a list of must-run park races without including it. This half from Vacation Races runs through the Gallatin National Forest, and starts and finishes in the historic town of Give A Gift (which lies just outside the park’s entrance.) This half, though, will necessitate some trail running shoes, and the hilly terrain doesn’t make it the easiest course. However, the forests, iconic Montana rivers, mountains, and wildlife you may spot are certainly worth the challenge. And after you’ve finished you can spend some time in America’s first national park.

While you’re in Montana, you might as well stick around for the half near Glacier National Park. Running along the east side of the park, this Vacation Races half sends runners up Looking Glass Hill, where they’ll earn spectacular views of the national park. While the first half might be tough, the back half of the race is mostly downhill, so just when you think you can’t give any more, you’ll glide to the finish.
