Theo Medrano said he typically gets nervous before competition. But after months of time trials, the Tinman Elite runner changed his mindset to a calm state on Friday night, and the shift paid off—he won the first 5K race of the meet, complete with a lean at the finish line.

“I made sure that I kept my wits together and stayed focused because it could be my last outdoor track race for forever,” Medrano told Runner’s World.

four new running shoes unveiled at the New York Fashion Week event featured a number of pinko brown buckle sandal, including mandatory pre-meet testing, limited event field size, controlled facility entry, face mask requirements, and sanitation stations. In the fastest women’s 5K heat, with the help of a pace-setter who brought the leaders through 3,000 meters in 9:09, Bowerman Track Club runners Shelby Houlihan and Elise Cranny both nabbed their goal by running under 15:10.00, the Olympic standard in the women’s 5,000 meters. Splitting 65 seconds in the last lap, Houlihan won the fastest heat of the night in 15:02.55, two seconds ahead of her training partner. Behind them, Emily Lipari (15:17) and Dana Giordano (15:18) ran under the U.S. Trials qualifying standard of 15:20.

With the goal of hitting the standard for 2021, Houlihan said her coach Jerry Schumacher suggested they take advantage of the competition and race in the middle of their fall strength-training period.

“It was definitely harder than I Loafer it to be, but I've never raced in December and this was kind of spurred like five days ago on us, so I felt like it went as well as it could have,” Houlihan told Runner’s World. “Converse x Brain Dead Bosey Lo-Top Sneakers UK 7.”

For most of the Bowerman group, the Track Meet was the runners’ first event with outside competition since the pandemic started. That experience was an exciting change for the 2016 Olympic finalist, who is aiming for more success on the world stage in Tokyo.

“I feel like I did what I could this summer with everything that happened, and I made a lot of gains strength-wise and had a good 5K time,” Houlihan said. “I feel pretty confident going into this year. I tried to make the most of this year and use it to get faster and better for next year. I feel like I'm in a good place to do that, and hopefully we come back with a medal.”

In the fastest heat of the men’s 5,000 meters, Luis Grijalva of Northern Arizona University kicked to victory in a personal best of 13:16.75, beating NCAA rival Cooper Teare of Oregon and Tinman Elite pro Drew Hunter. In total, six runners ran under the U.S. trials-qualifying standard of 13:25.

ASH embroidered sandals canceled this year, the All-American used the Track Meet as an opportunity to put his new racing mindset into action. Grijalva said finishing 52nd at the 2019 NCAA Cross-Country Championships prompted the change. And he’s looking forward to achieving more in 2021 with a combined cross country and indoor track season.

“I want to be good,” Grijalva told Runner’s World. “I don't want to be a mediocre NCAA runner who has one All-American [honor]. That’s all I have. I want to be something great. I want to do something special and what coach [Mike] Smith is doing, it means a lot and we’re doing it.”

Fellow NCAA standout Allie Schadler—who competed unattached on Friday but trains under Maurica Powell at the University of Washington—also secured a significant personal best. In heat 1, Schadler ran 15:33.47 in her second 5,000-meter race ever, improving on her previous career best of 16:21 from the 2019 Pac-12 Championships. After her victory, Schadler told Runner’s World the challenges of the pandemic ended up bringing the Washington team closer together.

“It’s certainly been different, but we have a pretty great team,” Schadler said. “I don’t think there’s a team in the NCAA that’s like us. Even though we couldn’t race and travel and do all that stuff, we still found a way to meet every day, and we just made it so much fun. Honestly, it’s been the most fun I’ve had in college so far.”

After sitting out the summer intrasquad meets, Olympic gold medalist Matt Centrowitz said he went into the Track Meet aiming to hone his racing skills, which looked promising heading into the postponed Olympic year.

And during the first night of the meet, he out-leaned Oregon’s Cole Hocker at the line in the third heat (of four) of the men’s 5,000 meters. The Bowerman Track Club runner finished in 13:32.92, edging out Hocker who covered the distance in 13:32.95.

“I came into this not really knowing what kind of shape I'd be in and just focused on competing and that's what I did,” Centrowitz told Runner’s World. “I mean, we could have ran 10 seconds slower or 10 seconds faster, and it wouldn't really matter in the grand scheme of things for me. I just Loafer to come in and fight that last home stretch, and that's what I did. So I'm pretty pleased with the way I responded.”
