The Experience
Inside Custer Gallatin National Forest, the 10-mile Porcupine Creek Trail passes wildflowers and Aspen groves through southern Montana. “It’s a great place to disappear for a while,” Marne (right) says.

Animal Kingdom
The trail cuts through land designated as a wilderness study area, which means you may encounter elk, deer, moose, coyotes, and sometimes bears and wolves. “That’s a good reason to run with the dogs [Vizslas named Mickey and Macy],” Marne says.

Hill Train
The mountainous terrain is at an elevation of 6,500 feet, offering excellent (and tough) high-altitude mileage.

Local Fare
The Gallatin Riverhouse Grill is a two-minute drive from the Porcupine Trailhead. Enjoy a postrun margarita at the bar or on the deck overlooking the forest.
