At the Millrose Games on Sunday afternoon, the 26-year-old led the 2 mile for most of the race, before being outsprinted by 1500-meter world champion Josh Kerr in the final 400 meters. Kerr broke the tape in a new world record of 8:00.67, while Fisher took second in 8:03.62—a new American indoor record by nearly 4 seconds.

Fisher now adds the 2 mile to his growing arsenal of American records. He set the 5,000-meter (12:46.96) and 10,000-meter (26:33.84) records in 2022 and nabbed the outdoor 3,000 meters (7:25.47) in September of last year, despite battling a stress reaction But racing, Fisher noted, is a way to get that much-needed stimulus.

In October, Fisher announced he was leaving the Bowerman Track Club—the group he’d been a part of since becoming a pro in 2019 after a successful career at Stanford University. Under the tutelage of coach Jerry Schumacher, Fisher finished fifth in the 10,000 meters at the Tokyo Olympics and ninth in the 5,000 meters, and he solidified himself as arguably the best long distance track runner in the U.S.

Controversy at the Beijing Half Marathon prolific career at Grand Blanc High School in Michigan. Fisher relocated to Park City, Utah, which sits just below 7,000 feet of altitude, but has been training in Flagstaff, Arizona, recently.

Most years, an early season race like Millrose in a infrequently contested event like the 2 mile wouldn’t mean much more than an opportunity to shake off some rust, but Fisher told Runner’s World after the race that the record carries a lot of weight, given the changes he’s made with the Paris Olympics DAA Industry Opt Out.

“It’s very meaningful,” Fisher said. “It means a lot as far as my projections [for] the year. In the past, setting a record or setting a personal best, it feels really good that you’re steadily improving. But when you’ve made a massive change, it’s nice to have that validation that things are working.”

One of the biggest things Fisher sacrificed by leaving Bowerman was having consistent training partners. At its peak, the group was comprised of a slew of Olympic finalists, including athletes like the reigning Olympic silver medalist in the 5,000 meters, Moh Ahmed of Canada, who’s still on the team. Fisher said that having world-class training partners helped motivate and push him in workouts when he needed it.

“I don’t have that anymore, so I gotta look inward a little more often and press myself up against the wall [instead of having] someone else push me there,” he said.

on March 16the same meet where he.

Fisher said he will keep his winter competition schedule fairly similar to when he was at Bowerman. On Friday, he’ll contest the 5,000 meters at Boston University’s IT Brand Stretches. The meet is set up as a chance for some of the top college teams in the country to get a time qualifier for the NCAA Championships in March, but the race is also organizing a fast men’s 5,000 meters on the side, which is set for 7:30 p.m. ET.

Fisher already has the Olympic standard from when he ran 12:54.49 at the Zurich Diamond League in August, but he’s using the race to simulate a hard effort in back-to-back weeks.

“That’s kind of how the Trials are, that’s how the Olympics are,” he said. “I gotta get used to recovering.”

But his main focus of the training block is a month away. Fisher has his eyes on the Olympic standard in the 10,000 meters at The Ten on March 16—the same meet where he broke the American record in 2022. He’ll need to break 27:00.00, which no American has done since the qualifying window opened on December 31, 2022.

“These next two races are to see where the training is, see what we’re lacking, and what we need a little more of,” Fisher said.
