World Athletics caps a shoe’s stack height at 40mm for it to be considered race-legal. But there’s no limit on the shoes you wear for training and daily miles. The Asics Superblast stands 45.5mm in the heel, making it Asics’s tallest and most cushioned shoe ever.

The Asics Superblast doesn’t match the SuperComp’s bouncy-house softness, but feels lighter on foot, making it more versatile and quicker to rebound than the SC Trainer at tempo paces.

Asics Superblast Overview

How is it possible that the Superblast weighs so much less than other illegally-high-stacked shoes, like the aforementioned New Balance SuperComp Trainer and the Mens ASICS Aggressor 5? Asics does it by combining its two most responsive midsole foams. The majority of the midsole is the “Turbo” version of Flytefoam Blast, used in the brand’s fastest racing models like the MetaSpeed Sky+ and MetaSpeed Edge+.

The light orange portion of the midsole is Flytefoam Turbo. The sliver of mint green closer to the outsole is Flytefoam Blast+.

Underneath is a thinner layer of “Plus” formula, a softer and more forgiving cushion that soaks up the sting of hard landings. However, since that squishy-soft layer is closer to the ground than to your foot, the Superblast has a firmer ride than you might expect from looking at it.

I wouldn’t place the Superblast in the true competitive “super shoe” category. Without a plated midsole, it just doesn’t have the same propulsive feeling many will want on race day. Instead, it fits better in a newer emerging category of “super trainers”—shoes that borrow the premium foams and tech that debuted in brands’ fastest racers, but better adapted for daily running.

“The Superblast’s springiness reminded me of those Moon Shoe toys from the ’90s.”

The result, at least in my experience, is a shoe that feels less aggressive than a Vaporfly, but still lets me recover more quickly from hard efforts with fresher feeling legs from day to day. Our testers shared similar experiences.

The thick midsole is all foam—there’s no nylon or carbon plate.

“As I ran more tempo and long runs in the Superblast, I was reminded of those Moon Shoe toys from the ’90s. There’s a good amount of spring to them,” said one tester, who typically trains in the Nike Pegasus or Brooks Ghost. “Given the amount of foam, I was also expecting the shoe to be a lot bouncier and more flexible; however, it was surprisingly rigid. This made the shoe feel more responsive, so I could wear it for speedwork but still get the benefits of a lot of cushion.”

The Good and Bad of Max Stack

The Superblast is definitely an outlier when it comes to cushioning. It’s the most cushioned shoe that Asics makes, and has one of the tallest heel stack heights (45.5mm) of any shoe we’ve tested. As a result, the ride has some unique qualities that separate it from other max-cushioned trainers. Here are the main pros and cons you’ll want to consider.

Cory Golden
Tester Cory Golden says max-cushioned shoes, like the Superblast, leave him feeling too disconnected from the ground—especially when running on the portions of pine straw along his local Georgia trails.

+ Pro: Smooth Ride at Any Speed

My favorite thing about the Superblast is that it also feels good at slow paces. I’ve found that many stiff and tall shoes don’t feel smooth for easy runs. The Superblast delivers a fun and responsive ride when I just want to let my legs spin for recovery-pace miles. (And when I say recovery pace, I mean everything from loping along at 10:30 pace to shuffling around for a 15:00 mile or two.)

I like that type of versatility when I head out for a run not knowing whether I’ll end up wanting to pick up the pace or relax into full turtle mode. The Superblast accommodates either choice; it’s pretty agreeable to those slight shifts in cadence zapatillas de running ASICS constitución media pie cavo talla 50.5 entre 60 y 100.

Winged padding reduces pressure on the ankle bone.

“This shoe felt good at almost every pace. It was comfortable, though not ideal, for shorter track workouts (150-meter and 300-meter repeats) because the thick cushioning could feel a little clunky. Fartleks felt great because of the shoe’s responsiveness when accelerating and decelerating,” said C.J. Romine, one of our wear-testers who runs for Lafayette College.

+ Pro: Shock Absorption for Fresher Legs

C.J. also appreciated the generous stack height and resilient midsole foam for its protection. After testing Asics’s FlyteFoam in several different shoe models, we’ve found the same. The material really soaks up shock well and seems to help mitigate some of the cumulative fatigue that accompanies blocks of heavy training during a marathon build.

“During 11-mile long runs, the cushioning minimized impact well. My legs didn’t feel like they were taking as much of a beating at the end of high-mileage weeks. The rockered sole still felt natural enough that it did not change my running form,” he added. C.J. runs with a neutral gait and midfoot strike, and has an average foot arch height.

- Con: Requires Some Break-in

Since there is such a hefty amount of foam underfoot, it may take up to 20 miles until the midsole feels truly long-run ready. Some of our testers had no issue running long in the Superblast right out of the box, but others felt that the ride improved as they put more miles on shoe. Make no mistake, the shoe’s ride remains stiff. However, some of the initial awkward rigidness dissipates as the foam compresses, and the shoe starts to feel livelier and flexes more readily with the foot.

Mike Miller
“My feet and my toes did not feel crammed. The toebox actually felt very comfortable and roomy,” said tester Mike Miller. The Superblast fits true-to-size for most, though two testers did find the shoe to run a touch long.

The upper fit improves, too. Any residual heel slippage we experienced early on either subsided or was easily remedied by tying a runner’s knot.

“The shoe did feel a bit narrow and stiff until it loosened up after about a week of training. My feet sat very comfortably in the shoes once they molded into the foam and upper a bit,” one tester reported.

Arch Height: High | Pronation: Underpronator | Footstrike: Forefoot

“Asics really nailed the upper. The heel cup sits lower on my foot than most shoes, which is a big plus for comfort. The super flexible and soft tongue stays right in place on the top of my foot. While the upper mesh is thinner and a bit rough, it didn’t rub. Walking around in these shoes, I thought they were going to be very soft. However, when actually running in them, they had a firm yet well-cushioned feel.

“The gaps in the outsole have a tendency to grab small stones,” tester C.J. said.

“I also thought the overall stack height and wide heel would be awkward or catch on sidewalks, but neither has been the case. They don’t have that ‘cloppy’ feeling with all the foam, and I still felt connected with the ground.

“After 100 miles, the foam and rubber feel really strong and sturdy with no signs of breakdown. The outsole was a little slippery on inclined wet cement and asphalt, but I had no problems on dry surfaces.”
