The redesigned Asics GT-2000 8 feels much smoother than its stiff, less-forgiving predecessor. Asics used lighter density foam for the new shoe; there’s a single, thicker layer of FlyteFoam instead of two layers of foam in the forefoot. The rear half of the shoe uses a slab of slightly higher-density foam beneath the FlyteFoam, with a patch of gel cushioning beneath the heel. The lighter foam and single-layer forefoot work wonders: Whereas previous (stiffer) GT-2000s slapped the pavement as your foot met the ground, the new shoe touches down softly and immediately sets you up for a smooth toe-off.

Part of the easier transition is thanks to added flex grooves in the high-abrasion heel rubber; coupled with the lighter heel foam, the GT-2000 8 feels forgiving yet responsive. The stability is subtle but noticeable if you’ve just run in a (neutral) Cumulus 21, for instance. To improve the engineered mesh upper, Asics moved the Tiger Stripes back and moved the toe reinforcement beneath the mesh to make the toe box more accommodating. The new fit lets you wear the shoe a little loose without feeling unstable. But the retooled midsole is still the best part; for mild overpronators, it’s an absolute pleasure to run in.

The GT-2000 7 felt harsh and stiff underfoot—a true Asics’s fan’s Asics. This new shoe still feels responsive, but the touchdown is buttery smooth, thanks to a thick slab of lower-density foam under the heel. It serves to absorb impact forces as you roll through your stride. Once onto your forefoot (and past the 10mm heel-toe offset), a layer of the company’s EVA-based FlyteFoam provides the rest of the cushioning until toe-off. The shoe is stiff, so cushioning feels stable underfoot, but the softer foam helps the stability feel smoother.

“My favorite feature about the shoe is the heel cushioning,” said one tester. “It provides enough to ease the impact, but does not make me feel slow.” However, the same tester said she thought the forefoot felt too harsh; RW Shoe Lab data confirmed her observation, with the GT-2000 8 registering significantly higher cushioning scores in the heel.

    Secure Upper

The two-layer mesh upper is narrow at the midfoot and wide in the forefoot, letting your toes splay out while holding your arch in place.

The two-layer mesh upper hugs your foot. It’s thin in the midfoot, wider in the forefoot (Asics added room by moving the Tiger Stripes toward the rear of the shoe), and the collar has generous foam padding. The tongue is similarly plush. That I was able to run the laces tight without constricting my ankle or midfoot made me more likely to choose the GT-2000 8 for faster efforts, when I prefer a secure fit. Testers also enjoyed the upper, noting that the material felt sturdy and supportive, but also flexible enough to prevent hot spots.

Asics isn’t known for skimping on rubber and the GT-2000 8 is no exception. The high-abrasion compound covers most of the outsole. In the forefoot, it’s divided by three horizontal flex grooves, and Asics used four patches of the AHAR rubber in the heel. We had plenty of traction for road running on wet and dry surfaces. Off-road, it doesn’t excel (AHAR isn’t very sticky and there’s little room between the treads). But for its intended purpose, the outsole is built to last—our sample barely showed wear after a month of testing.

The GT-2000 8 looks a lot like GT-2000s of old, but it’s much more dynamic once you lace it up.

Of the five or so Asics I’ve tested this year, the GT-2000 8 is my favorite. It’s the best execution of an Asics shoe, delivering the company’s signature stability and support (the reason you buy an Asics) without being too stiff and harsh (the reason you don’t buy an Asics).

With my history of lower-leg injuries, multiple physicians have told me I should be wearing stability shoes, and I ignore their advice because stability shoes tend to feel clunky and unnatural. The GT-2000 8 is different in that it barely feels like a stability shoe. With softer foam and fewer layers of it, the new shoe feels a bit more flexible and a lot more forgiving. Yet I still feel supported beneath my arch (I have flat feet, so your experience might be different).

Despite the ample foam, the GT-2000 8 doesn’t quite feel soft; I’d call the ride comfortably responsive. The upper is fantastic, bucking the trend of floppy, single-layer knit and instead swaddling your foot in a substantial, dual-layer mesh. The anatomical cut (narrow midfoot, wide forefoot) renders a secure fit, and the upper is padded where it needs to be for absolute comfort. It could be lighter or more breathable, but it ventilates well enough and excels at its principle job of keeping you comfortable and sure-footed.

It’s not a shoe of superlatives. If you’re looking for lightness and soft, cloud-like foam, we review go-fast Nikes and Hokas, too. That type of shoe is mawkish to run in, but ultimately doesn’t satisfy the needs of runners who require additional support. If you fall into the latter category, I’d recommend the GT-2000 8 as a stability shoe that doesn’t feel like one.
