Original article posted February 14th, 2024: The Nike Design by Japan tentpole was introduced in early 2023 via the nike lunar clipper turf black and blue, revealing a fresh new direction that links past and present. Seemingly taking inspiration from the brand’s Blue Ribbon Sports era and blending in modern touches, this under-the-radar project has another commercial on its ledger – the Zoom Vomero 5.
This upcoming release undergoes an unprecedented transformation largely due to two key factors. An enlarged leather Swoosh logo commonly seen in the brand’s products in the 1970s rests above the smaller check, while the ventilated cage at the mid-foot is swapped out for a smooth plating. The base mesh layer is also swapped for a more premium yet less breathable leather paneling, while the lace collar features jagged teeth around its edges. Arguably the blind standout detail of the Zoom Vomero 5 is also removed at the heel, replaced with a TPU plating. Pull-tabs are also added at the tongue and heel for assistance.
Overall, the Nike Design by Japan could be an homage to brand co-founder Bill Bowerman and his bold re-imaginations of footwear, epitomized by his ingenuous idea of gluing of a waffle sole on a pair of sneakers. This same recrafting could be seen in future Nike Design by Japan releases, so stay tuned as more iterations are likely to be revealed soon.
