According to Nike, designers spotted the fabric used while roaming the streets of Tokyo and found that it looked rather like “footbags that were popular during the 1980s”. From there they pulled the texture for some signature silhouettes (There’s also a Project BA “Hacky Sack”) as a reference to skate shop employees that would kick these “footbags” around when business was slow.
