Given their rarity, look-see samples have become some of the most desired sneakers on the market today. They’re a by-product of the retail release that eventually results in what we see hitting retail release. It’s essentially a test run for materials, color blocking, and finishes, which means not many pairs are made. It’s what makes pairs like this Jordan Brand May 2010 Air Jordan XI 25th Anniversary “Alternate Ferrari” Look-See Sample highly valued and scarcely obtainable — notwithstanding that doesn’t stop @englishsole from getting his hand on pairs — and today he gives us a never-before-seen look at the pair.
With the Jordan 14 drawing influence from the Ferrari 550M, it’s no surprise that the “Ferrari” colorways have been some of the more collectible 14s released. But the single panel look we’ve become accustomed to seeing wasn’t the only option on the table for the original “Challenge Red” release from 2014.
Right off the bat, we see the upper on the sample is actually the same ribbed finish used on the OG Candy Canes and the Last Shot 14s, here donning a shaggy red suede. Of course, the retail release sported a seamless suede appearance that leneded itself more towards the body of a European sportscar. Here, the midsole features a glossy, rubberized semi-metallic charcoal color as opposed to the printed carbon fiber midsole seen on the retail release. There’s also a differing midfoot shank, with a dark grey shade sitting in places of the chrome finish seen on the GR pair.
