British ultra runner John Kelly has set a new Fastest Known Time (FKT) for the Pennine Way, completing the 268-mile route in 2 days 16 hours 46 minutes.

Kelly, who won this year’s Montane Spine Race, finished 34 minutes ahead of the course’s previous FKT, which was set by Mike Kelly in 1989. The path runs along the Pennine hills from from Edale in the Derbyshire Peak District, through the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland National Park and finishes at Kirk Yetholm, by the Scottish border.

The second part of his challenge will take place next month when he makes his second attempt at the Grand Round, running the UK’s three big ‘rounds’: Paddy Buckley, Bob Graham, and Charlie Ramsay. The Grand Round will involved 185 miles of running, with 84,000 feet of elevation gain over 113 summits, plus over 400 miles of cycling.
