What is a running belt?

A running belt is a must-have accessory for fitness enthusiasts who need something to hold their bits and pieces. But belts are best suited to the sport of running, because most brands have designed them specifically to benefit the action of forward motion, while also minimising the risk of bounce and chafing which often comes with high-impact exercise.

'They fasten around your waist to hold your belongings while you work out,' explains Anthony Langley-Smith, co-founder of sports brand Proviz. 'There are countless options out there, but most running belts are very similar. They usually have a number of compartments, they can be made of different materials and come in a range of sizes, depending on what you need it for.'

What to look for in a running belt

When it comes to finding the right belt for you, consider the following points before you make a purchase:

  • Size: If you need all your essentials, look for a belt that's big enough to fit your phone (some of the bigger iPhones aren't considered standard size so double check) and other bits.
  • Fit: Aim for a belt that you can pull tightly around your waist so it lies flat against your back, as this will minimise the amount it moves during your run.
  • Weight: Most running belts are lightweight, but if you're a particularly petite runner, or you're planning on wearing the belt over a long distance such as a marathon, the lighter the better.
  • Fabric: If you're a particularly sweaty runner or you're exercising in a hot climate, it pays to consider the fabric. 'It is essential that the material is breathable and doesn’t retain moisture,' says Anthony. 'You need the material to allow heat to escape, so you don't overheat.'
  • Access: There's nothing worse than struggling to unzip your belt to reach a gel at mile 20. Look for a belt that is easy to access on the move. Added extras like loops on the waistband are always handy.
  • Water: Some running belts come with pockets for mini or soft water bottles. This can be useful during longer training runs, or if you've signed up to a race where you need to carry water.

How we test running belts

best running belts tested

Every running belt in this guide has been tested by the the Runner's World editors and contributors. They've been worn over various distances and terrains and through multiple weather conditions, and while testing we've assessed bounce, chafing, storage, fit, comfort and breathability, and how easy it is to access essentials on the move. We consider all this alongside cost, to determine what's truly value for money.

Why trust us?

At Runner’s World, we’ve spent decades covering everything related to running and our expert test team, which consists of experienced runners of all levels, have put countless pieces of kit through their paces, from running shoes and smartwatches, to headphones and high-spec treadmills.

We don’t just look at specs or simply unbox and evaluate the products we recommend; we live with them. We take gear out on long runs, races, trails, and everyday training routes to see how it performs under pressure. The North Face Summit Run Belt

Summit Run Belt

Pros

  • Water bottle stays in place
  • Loads of storage space — including trekking pole attachment
  • Comfortable with a snug fit

Cons

  • Flask not included

This belt from The North Face is a great alternative to a traditional hydration vests, providing an easy way to carry water or poles without the bulk of a backpack.

Made from lightweight, breathable fabrics with micro-perforations, this belt features four strategically placed stash pockets for small items such as energy gels or keys, and a secure-zip pocket perfect for your phone.

There’s a quick-access water bottle pocket – which you can use to store a soft flask (although the belt doesn’t come with a bottle, so you’ll have to purchase that separately), hiking poles or even stash a compact windbreaker.

During testing, we were pleasantly surprised by how well our water bottle stayed securely in place – no matter how bumpy the trails. We also liked that the belt didn’t ride up and offered a snug yet comfortable fit. Trust us when we say you won’t want to hit the trails without it.

BEST FOR LOW-BULK STORAGE

Kiprun Running Belt

Running Belt

Pros

  • Lightweight and comfortable
  • Need to step into it to put it on
  • Close-to-body fit doesn't bounce

Cons

  • Loads of storage

This running belt is a great option for training and race day if you want to carry all your fuel, but don’t want to wear a race vest. There's room for two small or one large soft flask, all the gels you’d want to carry, your phone, keys and whatever else you might need. It's also incredibly light, so depending on how you load it, it can feel like you're not wearing anything at all.

It's super stretchy and compressive, and there are five different sizes to choose from, so you want to try and get that fit right — wearing it too tight could put unnecessary pressure on the stomach, but if it's too loose it will bounce around. Get it right though and it’s a great option (and, some have said, an excellent dupe for the cult Naked Running Band — which we're trying to get our hands on).

BEST RUNNING BELT WITH A WATER BOTTLE

New Balance Performance Bottle Waist Belt

Performance Bottle Waist Belt

Pros

  • Reflective
  • 500ml sports bottle included
  • Plenty of storage — including bungee cord for spare kit

Cons

  • Not for fans of subtlety

Let's get one thing out the way: this is not a minimalist, barely-there running belt. Largely because it comes with a 500ml hard water flask, it is on the more substantial size. But that is by no means to say that this feels obtrusive or weighs you down as you run.

Thanks the padded, breathable back and clever angling of the water bottle pocket, this feels comfortable to wear, while offering tons of storage options. We're talking a large zipped compartment that extends behind the water bottle section, two mesh pockets within that section, two drop-in pockets on the front (idea for gels), plus the water bottle pocket and bungee cords to keep hold of any spare kit. There's also an elastic cord with an adjustable toggle to keep the bottle in place. Phew!

The belt adjusts with a buckle and there are useful clips on the band so you can tidy up any loose webbing. We'd advise wearing it on the back, but it can be worn front ways too thanks to the slanted bottle pocket (it doesn't get in the way of knees) — this might be preferred if hiking. The whole thing is also very brightly reflective, so is a great option for low-light runs.

Storage Large zipped compartment, 2 drop-in pockets, 2 interior pockets, water bottle holder, bungee cord storage

Kiprun Basic Unisex Smartphone Running Waistband

Basic Unisex Smartphone Running Waistband

Pros

  • Two-way compartment
  • Wallet-friendly

Cons

  • Can bounce around a little

Cheap, cheerful and infinitely useful, this simple running belt is brilliant value. Available in four colours, it has a main compartment thats split into two so your keys don't scratch your phone, there's a wire hole for your headphones, and the elastic waist is both comfortable and adjustable.

Because the belt is secured to the top of the pocket we found it can bounce around a little so probably isn't suited to long distances, but is a great option for beginners or your 5K jog.
