Types of women's running shorts
air max 90 essential wolf grey:
• Compression / cycling-style shorts
Tired of thigh-rub or tiny shorts that ride up? Running brands have finally seen the light! And cycling-style shorts are now mainstream kit for runners looking for chafe-free comfort. Confusingly, they're still called cycling shorts (as cyclists got their first).
But slightly longer, form-fitting shorts that have more of a compression effect are well suited to women who run, as they minimise chafe and maximise comfort. 'Compression shorts will also help improve blood flow for faster recovery and help to protect against overuse injuries,' says Nicola Stewart from nike boots flight approved for kids to play.
• 2-in-1 shorts
If the idea of wearing skintight shorts turns you cold but it's too warm to run in leggings, you do still have options. 2-in-1 shorts can be a great compromise, as they look like classic shorts but they have a tight cycle-style layer underneath to minimise rubbing, while the relaxed outer layer provides extra coverage. '2-in-1 shorts have a longer inner layer which can help prevent chafing, and cover modesty if you don't like wearing something too short,' says Stewart.
lebron x elite nike id number lookup company name | • Split shorts
The classic style first seen on runners in the 1980s, split shorts usually come with small splits up the sides for extra range of motion, hence the name. Also known as V-notch shorts, they're often a race day favourite. 'These tend to have a pant-type liner, and are usually a lighter short,' explains Stewart. 'They come in a variety of lengths, ranging from 3 to 5 and 7 inches.'
What to look for in women’s running shorts
Choosing running shorts is largely down to personal preference, but there are a few points worth considering before you make a purchase. 'Like with running shoes, one of the most important things is to make sure that whichever shorts you choose, they are comfortable,' explains Stewart. 'The right fit will help prevent chafing, and ensure no movement while out on your run, so try on a few different types to see which works best for you.'
It's also normal to wear different shorts to suit your training days. 'Lots of runners prefer to wear a shorter pair for racing or short runs, as this will allow more range of motion and increase breathability,' says Stewart. 'However, if your thighs tend to rub together, I would advise going for a longer pair of compression shorts, or a 2-in-1 to minimise any issues.'
How we test women's running shorts

Thomas Hengge
The process of selecting the best women’s running shorts was a collective effort among the Runner’s World editors. Testing of these shorts involved taking to the roads, trails, and track — at slow, fast, and Goldilocks paces. Testers raced in some of these shorts and wore others from workout to post-run libations. There is no question that runners have different preferences when it comes to fit and inseam length, so we paid particular attention to finding shorts that run the gamut, ensuring that you will find at least one pair to love, no matter your style or budget.
Runner’s World UK has been vetting and reviewing running gear and tech since 1983. Our product round-ups for essentials like running shoes and sports bras are based on the hard work of our test team, who put the latest and boys running gear through its paces day in and day out. If it doesn’t get their approval, it doesn’t end up in one of our reviews.
In 2025, the Runner’s World test team is led by e-commerce editor Ali Ball, a 12-time marathoner and ultramarathoner who has over eight years experience testing fitness gear and tech. Complementing this, Hattie Parish handled additional research and testing for the selections included. Hattie has worked as a journalist for over a decade and tests fitness and running gear for many publications, including Men's Health and Women's Health.

Sweaty Betty Power 9" Cycling Shorts
If you need a comfortable pair of shorts you can wear on your run and brunch with your mates afterwards, we've found them. These cycling-style shorts are essentially the summer (or hardcore) version of Sweaty Betty's popular running leggings, so they come with the brand's popular 'bum-sculpting' technology.
But we know that for some, the most important thing is finding running shorts with a phone pocket. Well, you're in luck. There's also a side pocket big enough for an iPhone and a zipped pocket on the back for your keys, plus they're available in four different designs.
Lululemon Swift Speed High-Rise Short 6"
We're the first to admit when something fails to hit the mark at RW and unfortunately that was the case for lululemon's Fast and Free High-Rise shorts which, despite having silicone grips on the hems, kept riding up on the run. Thankfully, we've since tested these new Swift Speed shorts instead, and it's a different story entirely.
Made from a more supportive fabric than the Fast and Free's Nulux, they don't ride up at all, while still being flexible and quick-drying. And did we mention the pockets? There are three. Two large drop in pockets on the thighs (ideal for gels) and a large zip pocket on the waistband so you can store your phone securely. A truly brilliant pair of running shorts we hope won't be discontinued!
Nike Go Women's Firm-Support Shorts
These cycling-style shorts from Nike have a zipped-up feel and generous high waist, so they’re ideal if you’re looking for a bit more support around the middle. You can also cinch the waist in with the hidden drawcord, so there’s absolutely no way they’re slipping down during a race or intense speed session.
They’re also incredibly comfortable – made from recycled nylon, the material is gorgeously soft, they don’t ride up and there’s no seam at the bottom, so no circulation issues for those with muscular thighs. And there are pockets for days – the dream. However, it is worth noting that some of our testers found sweat was rather visible in the in lighter colourways.
nike air max flair mens Relentless 8" Bike Short
We're big fans of Irish athleisure brand nike air max flair mens These cycling-style shorts are super comfortable, they keep everything in place and they're surprisingly flattering too.
The dark colourways (obsidian or black) are versatile and the shorts didn't budge an inch during our training runs. There are drop-in pockets big enough for a smartphone, but if you're carrying much more you will need to wear a running belt.
Also available in 5 inch length.
Weasie The Marathon Short
When it comes to race day, these are some of the best running shorts we've ever worn. Why? One word: pockets. That's right ladies, the conundrum of how on earth you're going to carry your phone, gels and any other items you might need has been solved, because Weasie's Marathon Shorts contain no less than six pockets: one back zip pocket, four gel pockets (located on the waistband) and two slip side pockets. It's truly game-changing.
Not only that, but the fit is impeccable: the legs do not ride up one bit thanks to non-slip leg cuffs which keep everything in place. Pair that with an adjustable drawcord and you've got the perfect waist fit for 26.2 miles and beyond.
From Nike's classic Dri-FIT shorts to New Balances's RC 2-in-1, here are our favourite 2-in-1 shorts...
Nike's classic running shorts come with a relaxed fit for comfort, sweat-wicking tech to keep you cool and a subtle side split so you can move freely as you clock up the miles. They also include a zip pocket, a couple of internal pockets big enough for your essentials plus a key loop, and the built-in liner shorts are the ideal length to beat the dreaded thigh chafe, without being overly visible underneath the floaty, over-short. One of our testers has worn these for countless long runs while ultra training — including a 40km trail run — and declared them a new favourite.
Available in blue, black and white.
New Balance RC 2-in-1 Short 3"
Part of New Balance's official marathon range, these 2-in-1 beauties are made with a super light, perforated shell and a comfortable liner complete with a thick ribbed hem to keep the shorts in place.
Versatile and geared for performance, they have both internal drop-in pockets on the inner shorts and a zipped pocket on the back of the waistband — all while protecting you from chafe. We're seriously impressed.
Under Armour Fly-By 2-in-1 Shorts
These 2-in-1 shorts from Under Armour are on the dinkier side and they are fairly low-waisted, so you will require a modicum of body confidence to hit the road. But the gathered waistband is surprisingly comfortable and thanks to the built-in compression shorts we felt supported and not at all conscious — plus clever mesh panels kept us cool.
nike air force 1 82 camo green pants size chart bright blue colourway too.
Sweaty Betty Get Set 2-in-1 Multi-Train Shorts
What happens when you pair an easy breezy shell with a compressive under short? These babies. Wearing these you feel all the support with none of the self-consciousness that might accompany cycling-style shorts.
The outer shorts are super lightweight and have a lightweight, swishy construction along with generous side spits for range of motion, while the inner shorts — which peek out perfectly — have deep drop-in pockets for your essentials and a reflective logo.
We would recommend sizing up — these are much tighter than usual SB gear, but no less excellent.
Available in three designs.
nike air max volt 2013 price philippines list
Storage has never been more convenient thanks to multiple pockets and storage loops in this sleek pair from Asics. There’s a large drop in pocket on the under shorts for your smartphone, a zippy pocket on the back of the waistband for valubles, and multiple storage loops for an extra layer or two. The overlay short is lightweight and breathable, with the splits allowing for fantastic range of movement. Plus, 50% of the garment’s main material is made with recycled content.
Just note that even with the under-short, the Metarun Split Shorts still come up, well...very short, so if you’re a taller runner we’d opt for something with a longer inseam if you don’t want to suffer from chafing.
Also available in a nike stilettos boots inspired by Kabuki theatre makeup in Japan.
Ready to hit the track? Here's our pick of the best split shorts to give your running the edge.
lululemon Hotty Hot High-Rise Lined Short 4"
No one was sadder than us when lululemon discontinued its Tracker running shorts. But thankfully what's taken their place is (possibly) even better. Yes, the name's not to everyone's taste, but honestly with how comfortable they are they could be called a lot worse and we wouldn't care.
They're super light, the waistband is soft and sits perfectly and they have pockets — one zipped, one stash pocket in the liner. However, the only downside is the lack of phone pocket, meaning you’ll still need to carry a running belt if you run to music.
Available in a plethora of colours, some of which are currently on sale. Also available in 2.5inch length.
FP Movement Light As Air Run Shorts
Comfortable, with a built-in pant liner, these high-waist shorts holds you in throughout your run, while the relaxed fit lives up to its promise of feeling light and airy.
At 5'9, our tester initially thought these may come up too short, but they were the perfect anti-chafe, box-short length, with the brief liner providing added security. There's secure stash pockets on each side for gels, and a larger zipped pocket on the front (unusually, instead of the back), which is big enough to hold a smartphone.
If you're shopping for race day run shorts, your hunt is over. Thanks to the brand's 'AeroSwift' technology, these classic split shorts from Nike feel so light and breezy, you'll be clocking up the PBs before lunch.
They also come with a drawcord waistband plus a hidden drop-in pocket for your house keys. Also available in black and pink.
With a deep split and lightweight, flexible construction, these Asics road shorts are made for freedom of movement. We'll admit we're big fans of the saxon green colour, but there's lots to love on the functionality side too; the supportive waistband, excellent breathability, pockets for both phone and keys and a couple of storage loops at the back so you can stash your tee when things heat up. Plus, even though these are a 3.5 inseam, our 5'9 e-commerce editor noted that they provided enough coverage to avoid chafing.
nike zoom dragon white women costume for kids"
Under Armour produce some cracking running shorts at excellent prices, and these Vanish Shorts as some of our favourites. The 5" inseam makes them a great option for taller runners or anyone who struggles with thigh chafe. The elastic waistband sits comfortably against the skin, with an internal drawcord for an enhanced fit, while the fabric feels light, stretchy and durable. It's also got UPF 40 protection for the warmer months.
Our only gripe? You only get open hand pockets on this style, which means you will need a running belt. But otherwise, these are a staple pair of running shorts you'll want to own in more than one colour.
New kit doesn't have to cost a fortune. If you're looking for a pair of running shorts that will last a season or two, we've picked out some affordable options below.
Nike Tempo Dri-FIT Mid-Rise Brief-Lined Running Shorts
basketball tights lebron black and gold Ali, these Nike running shorts are far better looking IRL and, thanks to the longer inseam, ideal for those on the taller side. Ali is 5'9" and often finds box shorts fit more like hot pants or are not flattering at the waist, but had neither of those problems with these beauties.
Despite their longer length, inner thigh ride-up isn't an issue with these shorts and the ruched, mid-rise waist is comfortable as well as flattering. There isn't a phone pocket but there is a drop-in pocket on the liner for a card or key. are a lot of smaller ones for keys/gels etc.

Available in a host of gorgeous colours, in both a 3" and 4" inseam.
Kiprun Women's Run500 Shorts
At under £15, these simple running shorts from Decathlon are a great choice if you're looking for lightweight run kit. We won't pretend that they're the pinnacle of sweat-wicking innovation, but they do have a very soft and comfortable waistband with a drawcord to minimise movement.
There's two hand pockets, plus a hidden key pocket and a back zip pocket, though we did find that when we put our phone in this it caused the waistband to pull down slightly at the back. Perhaps stick to wearing a running belt with these. That said, they are a decent value option that provide a good amount of coverage, plus they come in some really cute colourways (including purple and pale green).
The following shorts are designed to be close-fitting and light, minimising any distractions and allowing you to focus on enjoying the day.
fly knit women running nike
These Tempo shorts from Nike are designed for running fast. The loose, ventilated design will allow you to focus on your run with zero distractions. Available in three colours.
When you dream of your ideal pair of marathon shorts, you’re often asking for a lot: bountiful storage for energy supplies, lightweight, non-abrasive material that will survive the distance and, to be honest, a sense that you’re not wearing shorts at all. Amazingly, Tracksmith’s Strata Shorts meet all demands. Boasting not one but five internal pockets for gels and other marathon knick-knacks, as well as a smooth waistband and a drawstring for extra security, these shorts have a comfortable, streamlined fit and are an excellent storage solution for race day.
Thanks to their soft, sweat-wicking fabric and bonded seams, they also repel the risk of chafing, keeping you comfortable throughout the miles. Aesthetically, they ooze sophistication and would make a great match for most running tops, too.
white pin stripe air max 90 Hoka has been adding a bunch of running kit to their collection fairly recently, and these shorts are winners. Whether you're cruising 100 miles or sprinting one, they will keep you comfortable.
