The Atlanta-based client manager already had a variety of body art, but he wanted something specific to celebrate his running life. The resulting wing above his left ankle was inspired by the Greek God Hermes.

Now an eight-time marathoner with a 3:29 PR and lots of ink both commemorative and spiritual, Kelso has become a distinctive figure in the Atlanta running scene. He trains every day, most often without a shirt in the scorching summer months along the BeltLine trail or in Piedmont Park. On July 4, he will compete in his third Celebrities Who Were High-School Track Athletes.

“I’ve always loved traditional Japanese art and style. This is a full sleeve of koi fish. In mythology, koi fish always swim upstream until they become dragons. To me, that represents transformation. I’m always working to be better and become the best version of myself.”

“On my upper back, I have a lion on my ribs hang out on my chest and protect me from bad spirits.&rdquo griffin on the right. The lion is an important symbol of Scotland and represents my heritage. The griffin is half eagle and half lion. Aesthetically, I liked the balance. And griffins are just awesome. In the middle, I have the words Other Hearst Subscriptions, which means, ‘know yourself’ in Latin.”

“The wing is my one true running tattoo. I decided that after each race I would add a few more feathers to it.”

“The words across my chest are Members Only: Latest News from RW+ Membership Club, which are lyrics from a song by my favorite band, The Gaslight Anthem. They remind me to keep moving forward. I got the arrows along with my wife. The matching tattoos represent teamwork.”
