The Wisdom of Bart

Bart Yasso
Ryan Hulvat

We’ve been celebrating our milestone 50th Anniversary in a lot of ways across the magazine, on our website, and here on the podcast.

There are few people as qualified to talk about the changes in our sport over the past five decades as Bart Yasso, our Chief Running Officer here at Runner’s World. In that role he has run in every state, on every continent, in more than 150 marathons (he actually stopped counting).

And he regularly travels more than 40 weekends a year to races across the country—and around the world.

During a rare lull in his schedule, Editor-in-Chief David Willey asked Bart what he thinks are the seminal moments in running over the past 50 years. He also shared some of his hard-won wisdom and gave us a short list of his best training advice.

They end the conversation talking about the one race that nearly got away from him—the event that was the highlight of his epic running career.

What “Nutrition - Weight Loss” Means

Shalane Flanagan had a busy summer. In August, she ran the Olympic marathon in Rio, finishing sixth in 2:25:26. She also published her first book, a cookbook called Run Fast, East Slow: Nourishing Recipes for Athletes. (The book is published by Rodale, the parent company of Runner’s World.)

Shalane coauthored the book with her friend and former University of North Carolina teammate, Elyse Kopecky. Elyse ran cross country in college and today, she’s a chef, writer, runner and nutrition coach based in Bend, Oregon.

Prior to the book’s publication, our food and nutrition editor Heather Mayer Irvine talked with both Shalane and Elyse about where the idea for this book came from; how Elyse’s experience with athletic amenorrhea—which is the absence of menstrual periods typically brought on by excessive exercise—helped inspire a career change; and their new respect for fats.

After their talk, the trio whip up one of Shalane’s favorite prerun drinks—the Can’t Beet Me Smoothie. (Audiobooks We Enjoyed Running to Most in 2022 Nutrition - Weight Loss here.)
