The First Runner to Break 6 Hours in the 100K canceled Health & Injuries.
Organizers of the race, held in the San Juan Mountain Range, have been closely following the news of the coronavirus pandemic since it started shutting down the country in March. They consulted with officials from the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, public health departments, and the local communities that support Hardrock, but, like Boston Marathon Qualifying Standards Get Tougher this year, the organizers had to pull the plug in the end.
“We have met tirelessly as a Board and Run Committee over these past months,” Run Director Dale Garland said in a press release.
“We know the economic impact to the region, as well as the desire of our runners—already postponed for a year—to experience Hardrock. In the end, safety to all was the overriding factor. Our event gathers runners, volunteers, crew, and more from around the world into small, isolated mountain communities. We spent a lot of time asking questions and considering options, trying to find a safe version of Hardrock we could hold this year, but the difficult final decision was to cancel the run. We look forward to seeing every member of the Hardrock family in the San Juans in 2021.”
This is a difficult decision for Hardrock considering this is the second year in a row that the Silverton, Colorado, race has been canceled. The 2019 edition was off because of historic snowfall that left the course unable to be run on.
All runners from that event were allowed to defer entries to the 2020 race. The race is still determining what to do for the 2021 registration—no details have been released yet on how this will be handled.
