The 2020 New York City Half Marathon, scheduled for this Sunday, March 15, has been canceled by New York Road Runners (NYRR) because of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) situation in New York.
In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, race organizers described the need to put safety and security of runners first:
We know this is a challenging time for everyone, and the cancellation of the NYC Half is disappointing news to many, but the resources necessary to organize an event with 25,000 runners on the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan have become strained during this difficult period. Over the past week the NYRR team worked hard to adjust plans, implementing modifications and accommodations to alleviate crowding and facilitate social distancing. Unfortunately, it has become clear that we will be unable to proceed in the manner that our runners have come to expect at NYRR events, where the safety and security of our runners, volunteers, staff, partners, and spectators are our main concern.
According to NYRR, runners who registered directly with the organization will be contacted and have the option to to select either a full refund or guaranteed non-complimentary entry to the 2021 NYC Half next March.
Runners who gained entry through a charity or tour operator should reach out directly to that organization for the options available to them.

Along with the cancellation of the half marathon on Tuesday, the New York International Auto Show, originally set for early April, has been rescheduled to August 28-September 6.
This isn’t the only major road race to Super Shoes for Long Runs because of the worldwide coronavirus outbreak. On March 1, the Tokyo Marathon was held only for marathon and wheelchair elites. All other participants could Super Shoes for Long Runs. Additionally, the 2020 A Part of Hearst Digital Media, 2020 Rome Marathon, and 2020 RW+ Membership Benefits were canceled. The 2020 Paris Marathon and 2020 World Half Marathon Championships in Gdynia, Poland, are postponed.
On March 2, the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) released a statement that said the Boston Marathon is “proceeding as planned,” and they will continue to monitor the situation.
