Pistorius, who became the first amputee runner to compete in the Olympics in 2012, is on trial in Pretoria, South Africa, for the murder of Steenkamp on February 14, 2013. He pleaded not guilty to the murder and other gun charges.
Pistorius broke down while recalling when he first realized he had shot Steenkamp through a bathroom door. It was the first time he has spoken publicly about the shooting. He said he thought Steenkamp was an intruder.
Pistorius testified that he heard a bathroom window opening and believed someone was breaking into his house, according to the AP report.
“That’s the moment everything changed,” Pistorius said.
He said he hurried to get his gun to defend himself and his girlfriend, who he said he thought was still in bed. He said he wasn’t wearing his prosthetic legs when he shot through the door. Tuesday in court, he removed his prosthetics and stood in front of the bathroom door, which was set up in the courtroom, to show how he fired the four shots.

“At that point all I wanted to do was look inside to see if it was Reeva,” Pistorius said.
