Runners put their legs and lungs to the test Wednesday night for the 40th Empire State Building Run-Up: a grueling challenge that asks competitors to climb 86 flights—or 1,576 stairs—up the famed New York City skyscraper.
Piotr Lobodzinski, 31, of Poland, won the men’s race in 10:31, which was 12 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Suzy Waltham, 43, of Singapore, took the women’s race in 12:11.
The total vertical distance climbed in the Run-Up is approximately one-fifth of a mile. Both first-place finishers were slightly off from the Run-Up records: Paul Crake of Australia set the men’s record in 2003 with a time of 9:33, and Andrea Mayr of Austria claimed the women’s mark in 2006 with a time of 11:23.
