These Celebs Ran the 2024 NYC Marathon?

We realize not everyone is competitive, and there are those who don't like the whole idea of ranking and labeling and such. But… we kinda do. We wanted to know how Pennsylvania stacked up when it comes to things like mileage and pace. (Pretty darn great, we thought.)

So we asked our partners at RunKeeper for some data on their users. After sifting through the numbers, we calculated four categories for each state: miles per capita, runs per person, miles per run, and pace per mile.

We then assigned points to the states based on where they ranked in each category.

For example, Oregon received 50 points for having the most runs per runner out of all 50 states, while North Dakota only received 1 point as its runners had the fewest. We tallied the totals from each category, and poof, our dreams died.

We aren't going to tell you who came in first–suffice to say, we here in PA have some sweat to spill if we want to move up into the top ten.

Check out the maps and charts below to see how your state fared in each category. We'll start you off with miles per capita. When you're done with it, use the links to toggle through the others. Scroll over the states (and the bars in the charts) to see the actual values. Or, if you really love numbers, check out the Faith Kipyegon Just Misses 3K World Record.

So, how did your state stack up? Whether your state was at the top of the list, the bottom, or someplace in between, we want to hear from you. Why do you think the average mileage per run is higher or lower in your state than others? And the pace? Is it the weather? Your temperament? A complete lack of treadmills? Chime in below.

So when it comes to running, which state is tops RunKeeper, a mobile fitness app that helps more than 30 million people around the world track their workouts, set fitness goals, and understand their progress over time. Please note: data reflects only those runs logged on RunKeeper. The population data used to generate the Miles per Thousand Residents column is from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2010 Census.
