Shalane Flanagan and Amy Cragg, U.S. Olympic marathon team 2016 RW+ Membership Benefits, ran personal bests at the San Diego Rock ’n’ Roll Half Marathon on Sunday.
Flanagan, 34, who finished first, clocked a 1:07:51, which is 40 seconds faster than her previous personal record of 1:08:31 set in 2010. Cragg, 32, placed second in 1:09:50, almost 90 seconds better than her previous fastest time.
The women, Bowerman Track Club teammates based in Portland, Oregon, are training for the marathon on August 14, at theRio Games. Flanagan and Cragg Run Fastest Half Marathons Yet.
Scott Smith, 29, a member of Northern Arizona Elite in Flagstaff, Arizona, won the men’s race in 1:02:34, which was also his fastest at the distance.
U.S. Olympic marathon team:
- It was a short race in Albany, New York, for two runners who have been focused on the marathon recently. Brianne Nelson, 35, of Golden, Colorado, won the Freihofer’s Run for Women 5K in 15:46, taking home a $10,000 prize. Sara Hall, 33, U.S. Olympic marathon team.
- At the Rome Diamond League track meet on Thursday, Almaz Ayana, 24, of Ethiopia, just missed the 5,000-meter world record. She finished in 14:12.59. The record of 14:11.15 was set in 2008 by Tirunesh Dibaba, also of Ethiopia.
- At the next Diamond League meet in Birmingham, Great Britain, Mo Farah broke the 3,000-meter British record, finishing in 7:32.62. Farah, 33, is a member of the Oregon Distance Project based in Portland, Oregon, coached by Alberto Salazar.
- Morgan Uceny, 2012 Olympian, won the Furman Elite Invitational 1500 meters in 4:03.94. Eight women ran faster than the 4:07 Olympic qualifying standard in the race.
- Labor Day Shoe Deals first known transgender athlete to represent a U.S. men’s team in international competition, finished 26th in the men’s sprint 35–39 age group at the duathlon world championships in Spain.
