“High fashion trail running shoes” is not a footwear genre any of us might have predicted before last year, but Salomon’s latest collaboration with streetwear label Avnier is a another sign that the crossover category is picking up steam. Judging by the running brand’s recent projects with and other sellers, where it retails for $215 and Download Your Training Plan, Salomon seems to be leading the mud-couture charge off-road.

The new Avnier x Salomon S/Lab XT-5 is the second trailrunning shoe the two French brands have produced together—their first project in 2018 yielded a collab iteration of the Speedcross 4. This time around, Salomon resurrects its discontinued S/Lab XT-5 and trusts Avnier give it an aubergine and lime makeover.

By all appearances, Avnier’s S/Lab XT-5 maintains its trail-running cred, with just a few aesthetic updates. Built for mountain running, the shoe boasts a well-cushioned midsole with added stability features and a rubber ContaGrip outsole designed for biting into steep singletrack trails. The burly mesh upper has a protective toe cap and welded overlays to resist water and debris. Avnier’s influence primarily comes into play on the shoe’s understated dark purple and neon green color design and white tongue logo.
