Designer Virgil Abloh has already remixed the top shoes in Nike’s stable—including the speed-oriented Zoom Fly and classic Air Jordan—so it should come as no surprise that his Off-White streetwear label is taking on another Vapor Street design. But let’s be real: This is the strangest “running sneaker” released by the collaboration to date.

Inspired by track and field, this women’s shoe has a phone-book-thick React foam midsole—borrowed from the Nike deep air retaliate green shoes black friday—and all of the design quirks we’ve come to expect from an Off-White Nike, like a translucent ripstop upper, quotation-offset text printed on the midsole, and a plastic tag zip-tied to the laces.
It also has an unconventional lacing system, with neon rope laces attached to the corners of the shoe and more practical, traditional laces beneath.
But the outsole is where the shoe announces its odd intentions and gets downright weird. Baby track spikes sprout from the bottom of the shoe, from a few outcroppings at the heel to a larger nest at the forefoot leading all the way up to the toe. Does it look cool? Hard to say—the spikes actually remind me of one of those old cartoon illustrations of how a blackhead removal strip works. Given that this is probably a shoe more oriented toward sneakerheads than track athletes, the spikes are unlikely to be a big asset in a sprint race, but they might give you more traction in your day-to-day travels.
