More proof trail racing is gaining momentum outside the running world: London-based, 1990s-inspired skateboarding brand Palace just released a collaborative version of Salomon’s Speedcross 4. The shoe features a mesh upper with splattered patterning across the wrapped overlays in two colorways, black and white.
Designed for gripping gnarly technical terrain and sticking to the side of a trail berm like a skateboard hugs a vert ramp, Palace’s Speedcross 4 appears to have kept everything that made the original 2016 Salomon great: excellent foot lockdown and a firm but smooth ride over aggressive chevron lugs. Salomon’s Quicklace fastening system makes its trademark appearance, with long cord laces that tighten easily and tuck into a lace garage. (You can see what we thought of the A firm, responsive midsole keeps your foot connected to the trail; Salomon has since released the Speedcross 5 earlier this year.) The skateboarding brand’s mark is evident in the color graphics and Palace branding on the tongue and at the toe.
As hiking and trail shoes continue to gain (deep-lugged) traction in sneaker culture, you can expect to see more fashion brands teaming up to make over your favorite trail running shoes soon. In the meantime, look for this Palace x Salomon shoe collaboration when it drops on Palace’s website and in stores on September 6.
