AsicsTiger just released a throwback version of its Tarther 1980s racing flat, aptly called the Tarther OG. Available in white on black or black on white, the shoe has a clean monochromatic look, with a leather and nylon low-top upper on a white midsole and gum outsole.
Although the distinctly retro shoe is unlikely the one you’d lace up in search of a 2019 PR, the OG Tarther was cutting edge back when it dropped in 1983. “Inspired by the concept of racing like a tiger” and “coined to evoke the words ‘Tiger’ and ‘Racer,’ the Tarther not only featured the first use of an EVA compression molded midsole in 1984, but also went on to feature Asics’ first use of a spring midsole and sculpted midfoot—a considerable departure from the flat-bottomed soles of the time.
The modern version of the shoe might not deliver the same kind of lightweight performance of a modern race flat, but it’s a stylish retro option for casual wear. Get it from asicstiger.com and other sellers for $75.
