Erlebniswelt-fliegenfischenShops Asks: What’s Your Outfit Formula?

Does your handbag finish off your look or is it the starting point?

Bags In The Wild Instagram, Did We Just Collectively Forget the Bottega Veneta Pouch posted a poll on stories asking whether or not you usually have more than one bag in your rotation. If you’re unsure what I mean by this let me explain. When I’m home I typically keep whatever purse I have packed hanging off of my coat rack ready to grab as I head out. But, and here’s where the poll question came in, I never have just one bag hanging there. Typically I have two bags dangling off the rack, out of my closet and sans dust bags ready to be used. I’ll easily transfer my stuff from one bag to the next as I head out the door, and I rotate between whichever one goes best with my outfit. Currently I’ve got my Louis Vuitton Get In Touch MINI MODEL CHAIN BAG on repeat.

This morning I threw on olive green jogger pants with an off-white turtleneck, a denim jacket and my favorite Nike AF1s. The color palette I had going on went best with my speedy, which was already packed from yesterday, so off I went. However on Sunday when I headed out for after dinner drinks in a vintage black and white polkadot dress with tights and black booties I quickly moved my wallet, phone, and small cosmetics case into my SDJ. I’ll seesaw back and fourth like this for about a week or two until I put together a certain outfit that calls me to another purse. At that point I usually will take everything out of whatever bag is packed and put said purse back into my closet. Thus, the cycle continues.

Yes, I love bags, and I love how my purses are an extension of me, but I don’t often give them very much thought when I’m getting dressed day to day. I put a lot more thought into the details of my outfit (i.e.: Sneakers or booties? Just rings or rings and necklaces? Denim jacket or bomber jacket?) and then a handbag is my last thought before my outfit is complete. The times of which my handbag is the focus of my outfit are very few and far between, and it’s usually only when I’ve just purchased a new bag that my outfit begins with my handbag choice. There’s no right or wrong way to get dressed, and it’s not about how you get dressed rather it’s about the end result, but it’s still an interesting thing to discuss. Do you pick your handbag first and go from there, or are you like me and your handbag is the last stop before the final destination?

I use a bag for 1 week straight then move on to another bag the following week. Because of this, my bag is usually the starting point of my outfits. For example, if I were using a pink bag that week, my outfits would usually have a touch of pink or I will wear a monochromatic outfit so that the pink bag will be the pop of color.

This is pretty close to what I do. I don’t feel like switching bags multiple times a week, so dress that week in things that will complement my bag. It is easy to be monochromatic since I mostly wear black and occasionally gray or white.

I never match my bags to my outfit. Mostly because it would drive me nuts as I don’t like neutral (black, brown, beige) colored handbags. I have been at peace for a long time that my bags will never match so I wear what I like.

I always match my outfits and my bags, and switch bags every day. Whether I choose the bag to match the outfit or vice-versa depends. For example, my Gucci Tian Supreme is a statement in and of itself, and same with my multicolore LV Alma. I plan simple outfits in complementing colors for these types of bags. On the other hand if I plan a more pattern-driven outfit, I pick out a solid color bag in a complementing color/style.

I never match my bag with my outfits. I have a designated work bag which is actually a Kipling medium sized diaper bag. The most practical bag due to its multiple compartments and pockets. The only time I switch and match the bags are for weekend outings and church on Sundays. Switching bags everyday would drive me bananas especially if I don’t have designated slip pockets for easy access to my cellphone and MetroCard.

I almost never change out my work bag. I can’t be fussed to change it out since it mostly just goes from the car to my office and back, I don’t much care if it clashes with my outfit. I do generally buy my work bags in neutral colors, like black or grey so that they don’t clash with my work clothes, but right now, I’m using a darker green-blue bag and I don’t care that it doesn’t match some of my outfits. I like to have a professional looking bag but my work bags are more for function than anything else.

At night or on weekends, I generally grab a bag that goes with my outfit/fits the occasion and stick with it unless it clashes or isn’t suitable for what I’m going to do. I rarely build an outfit around a specific bag unless it’s brand new or I’ve been craving using a specific bag. Most of the time I wear the same casual bag all weekend, but if I have events, I can switch my bag out a couple of times in a weekend. All of my bags are handy and I don’t generally carry a lot so I don’t mind switching non-work bags.

When I have to dress up I have to think of what I’m going to wear first, then my makeup, the bag choice then sorts itself out. I wear all of my bags with sneakers and heels and everything in between, I don’t draw lines to what goes together and what doesn’t. Only those times when I’m meeting clients or our company’s high management I absolutely always do a leather designer bag, black trousers, top and a blazer.
95% of the time I have a bag I want to carry and just throw on something that it doesn’t clash with. For everyday life, clothes are just the necessary evil I have to deal with when I leave the house – if I could do as I please, I’d wear either cotton jogging pants and a hoodie or my pink unicorn jumpsuit all the time.

I have a few “work” bags that I like for during the week and I rotate them depending on my mood, but not necessarily my outfit because my bag sits on a chair in my office all day. On the weekends I pick my outfits first and then I will choose a bag that compliments what I am wearing.

I do the exact same thing as Kaitlin except I keep 3-4 bags in the foyer. Once I’m dressed and walking out, I decide which ones works the best with that outfit. Sometimes it’s a pop of color and sometimes it’s a match but it allows me to use more bags more often.
