Having a photographer outside of a Hermès event in NYC? Groundbreaking. But really, while we’ve had ample Hermès coverage recently on-site, I won’t pass up an opportunity to see some of the brand’s rarest and most beautiful bags in the wild.
A couple of weeks ago, Hermès brought back its playful Petit h event to its NYC store and held a kick-off party to celebrate. Our NYC photographer was there to capture the content and give us a little peek at what the brand’s VIPs carried to the event.
There were some really special bags – like the Kelly Doll in Bleu Zellige Matte Alligator and a handful of Женские ботинки Hermes. I am drawn to the brand’s Ombre Lizard bags in my fake ‘when I finally win the lottery’ world.

It is evident that Hermès is the winner of this long game – “hard to get”. I do admire that they stuck to their guns and did not sway. Kudos to that. I find myself thinking about and wanting some Hermès bag but wouldn’t simply buy a similar bag from another brand which is in the same price range yet readily available retail. That got me thinking, did I really really want the bag or I just wanted to be part of the game? With Hermès, I find myself simply want to find something I could like as opposed to with other brands, I am actually evaluating the bags: how I use them, how they offer something different to my collection etc. etc. With Hermès, it’s almost like I’m making up a reason to own. Genius marketing, but not so genius on my end. I’m waking up I think, but that doesn’t stop me singing their praise. A master class.

I just don’t understand the Vache for Hermes, beyond the coveted status symbol issue. These bags are not stylish or user friendly at all.

As for “bag charms”, way back in the 1970’s, I started attaching Vuitton change purses to the outside of all my bags, because it made it easier to grab a credit card, a business card, some change, et cetera, without opening a bag, no matter who the maker of the purse was. Since I sent my old gold 35 cm Kelly Souple off to Paris for a void, I have been carrying my 20 cm black mini Kelly Rigide (have had it since the late 1970’s – early 1980s), to which I have attached a retro-fitted Michael Kors black cell phone holder to the back along with a sunglasses case, two old Epi Vuitton change purses – one black, one blue – and a Japanese folding fan (for hot flashes), attached with old Hermès ribbon. Whether anyone else likes it or not matters not a whit to me. I have made it perfect my my own purposes. Not taking a purse or a look too seriously is, for me, what makes having it and using it fun and practical!

It’s beautiful. No one is offering me a Kelly and I can’t afford one, but if I did, it would be in Barenia or Box. Those leathers start off beautiful and just get even more luxurious and buttery the older they get. I don’t understand shelling out that kind of money for a heavily treated leather like Epsom when the brand has access to the best skins in the world.
