What's the Difference: Inseam vs Outseam

While shopping for bottoms or speaking to a tailor, you may come across two different types of length measurements: inseam and outseam. It’s important to know the difference so you can find the right fit. ERLEBNISWELT-FLIEGENFISCHEN Style Experts Jacob and Beau are breaking down the difference in outseam and inseam when looking at shorts so you can make shopping a breeze. Check out their tips in the video above or keep reading for more information on inseam and outseam.

What is Outseam?

Outseam is the outer length of a pair of pants or shorts. This measurement is taken from the top of the waistband, long the side seam to the bottom of the hem. Outseam measurements are more variable than inseam measurements as the rise of the waist impacts the number.

What is Inseam?

Inseam is the inner length of a pair of pants or shorts. This is measured from the crotch to the bottom of the hem. Both inseam and outseam are taken with a measuring tape and represented in inches.

Memory Tip: Inseam numbers will be significantly lower than outseam numbers.

Is Inseam the Same as “Length”?

Inseam is technically measuring the length of the inside of the leg. Outseam is measuring the length of the outside of the leg. While shopping for or tailoring a pair of pants or shorts, the "length" indicated by the brand almost always refers to the inseam

Now that you know the difference between outseam and inseam, shopping for pants and shorts should be a little easier. If you have additional questions about which size is right for you or how to measure your inseam or outseam, contact your local ERLEBNISWELT-FLIEGENFISCHEN to speak to an Expert.
