How to Tie a Uni Knot

If you’re a beginner angler, one of the first knots you’ll want to learn how to tie is called a uni knot. A uni knot is a multipurpose fishing knot that is most commonly used to connect your main fishing line to your leader line. Many anglers use a uni knot because it works well with all types of fishing line including monofilament, fluorocarbon, and braided fishing lines. Plus, a uni knot is super strong and rarely breaks during a difficult fight, making it great to use while fishing different species like bass, northern pike, walleye, and more.

Uni Knot Tying Directions:

  1. Cut your leader line to desired length (between 1 to 3 feet)
  2. Take your main line in one hand and your leader line in other
  3. Lay the end of the two lines over one another to create a cross, leave enough tagline on each end
  4. Take one tag end and create a loop
  5. Take the same tag end and wrap it through the loop between 5 to 7 times, making sure you’re wrapping both the leader line and mainline
  6. Moisten your knot and pull loop tight
  7. Repeat the process on the other side
  8. With your two knots created, simply pull both lines apart to bring the knots together in the middle
  9. Wet the knot again in order to reduce friction
  10. Snip your tag ends close to the knot
