Kids’ Bike Size Guide

Choosing a bike for your child should not be a daunting task. There are a few key things that you need to consider when choosing a kids’ bike, but once you understand how to measure your child for a bike and what to look for based on your child’s height and age, you can shop confidently!

What Size Bike Does My Child Need?

Kids’ bikes are measured by the size of the wheel, not the frame like adult bikes. You’ll typically find kids’ bike sizes ranging from 12 to 24—this number is representative of the wheel height in inches. For example, a kids’ 20 bike means the wheel of the bike is 20 inches tall. Once kids are big enough, they will start riding adult bikes, which start at 26” wheels.

The kids’ bike size chart below is a good starting point when deciding which size bike fits your child. Remember to measure your child’s inseam to find the most accurate fit!

How to Measure Inseam

To measure your child’s inseam, you’ll need a tape measure and a book (or similar item). The book will act as the saddle or the seat of the bicycle. Follow these steps to find their inseam:

  1. Have your child stand against the wall with their feet shoulder distance apart.
  2. Place the book (spine up) between their legs, just where a bicycle seat would be.
  3. Measure the length from the book’s spine to the floor. This is your child’s inseam!

Tip: Repeat this process 3x to get the most accurate inseam measurement.

12-Inch & 14-Inch Bikes

12-inch and 14-inch bikes are the smallest options for young riders. At this size, kids can choose between a balance bike, like these Strider bikes, teaching balance and confidence, or a pedal bike, which can be used with or without training wheels. For children still developing strength and coordination, starting with a balance bike is recommended.

Typical Age Range: 2 to 4 years

16-Inch Bikes

16-inch bikes are the next step up, and many riders move directly from a 12- to 14-inch balance bike to a 16-inch pedal bike. Most 16-inch bikes have removable training wheels and rear coaster brakes that stop the bike when you pedal backward.

Typical Age Range: 5 to 8 years

20-Inch & 24-Inch Bikes

Designed for children with a few years of riding experience, 20-inch and 24-inch bikes become more advanced with options like hand brakes and multiple gear selections. If your child is ready to ride hills and learn more advanced cycling, geared bikes can be introduced at this age.

Typical Age Range: 6 to 11 years

How to Test a New Kids’ Bike

Now that you know which size of kids' bike works best, it's time to check the fit!

  1. Measure your child’s height and leg inseam in inches, and use the size chart above to determine which bike size to test out.
  2. Have your child straddle the bike. They should be able to do so with their feet flat on the floor without their crotch resting on the frame.
  3. Can they reach the handlebars? Their arms should be slightly bent at the elbows and the grip should feel comfortable. If their arms are fully extended, the bike does not fit.
  4. Have them sit on the bike and pedal. At the bottom of their pedal stroke, their legs should be slightly bent at the knee. If their leg is fully extended at the bottom of the pedal stroke, the bike is too tall.

Tip: Although it may be tempting to buy a larger bike for your child to ‘grow into’, our Bike Experts advise against this. It’s important to choose a bike that fits your child where they’re at for comfort and safety reasons.

Since you now know how to measure your child for a bike, what size to buy, and how to test that the bike is the right fit, you’re ready to enjoy a stress-free shopping experience for your child’s new bike! Before your child starts riding their bike, make sure they have a well-fitting bike helmet to wear.
