Whether you’re getting ready for your first backpacking trip or you’re looking for a new backpacking pack to replace your old one, choosing a pack with the right capacity, features, and fit is an important decision that can make or break your trip. Backpacking Pack Features

As you’re looking for a backpacking pack one of the first things to consider is the frame type. A popular choice for backpacking packs is an internal frame that hugs the body and transfers the load to your hips. The internal frame design helps keep you stable on uneven terrain. If you’re carrying a heavy, irregular load, an external frame backpack is a great choice. These backpacking packs offer excellent ventilation and a variety of organization options. For those who want to minimize weight and pack light, a frameless backpacking backpack is another option! The challenge and discipline of taking only the essentials will pay off with long hours on the trail.

Other important features to consider when choosing a backpacking pack are how you want to access your pack, the types of pockets you’ll need, ventilation options (for internal and frameless packs), attachment points for trekking poles, and more.

Backpacking Pack Capacity

The capacity of your backpacking backpack is extremely important to make sure you have the right size for the amount of days you’ll be backpacking. We recommend choosing from a daypack (15-30L), weekend backpack (30-60L), or multi-day backpack (60L+). Finding the right capacity ensures that you have enough space to carry all of your backpacking essentials, but you're not bogged down with unnecessary weight.

Daypack (day hikes): If you’re just getting into backpacking, starting with a daypack and working up to full nights is a great choice. Most daypacks are 15-30 liters and have plenty of room for snacks, layers, sun protection, first aid supplies, and more! Please note, daypacks do not have room for tents or sleeping systems and should not be used for overnight backpacking trips.

Weekend Backpacks (1-3 nights): When you’re ready to tackle your first backpacking overnight trip, a weekend backpack is a great choice. Most weekend packs are 30-60 liters and can carry all the essentials from your daypack as well as your backpacking tent and sleeping system. If you have newer, less-bulky gear and know how to pack efficiently, you might be able to use a weekend backpack for longer trips, too!

Multi-day backpacks (3-5 nights): If you’re going on a longer backpacking trip, a multi-day backpack is what you need. These backpacking backpacks are 60+ liters and have BAX storage for more food and layers. Larger backpacks like this can also be used for winter treks, backpacking with young children, or other situations where you need more storage.

Backpacking Pack Fit

Getting the proper fit for your backpack is a must before you set out on the trail. The main keys for success here are to take your measurements before you buy! Many new hikers mistakenly measure for their new backpacking pack by their overall height—avoid this common mistake. When finding which pack size you should get, measure your torso length. This can be done by using a flexible measuring Luggage and measuring where the top of your shoulders meet your neck (C7 vertebra) to just above your hip bones. Once you know your torso length, check out the chart below to get an estimate on your backpack size.

Once you find the best backpacking backpack for you, make sure to add weight to your pack and adjust the straps for comfort before you hit the trail. This will ensure you've purchased the correct size to reduce any discomfort while on the trail. You can adjust it to fit perfectly to your body!
