When prepping for the football season, many players are looking for a new pair of football cleats. After finding the perfect pair, don’t overlook the importance of properly breaking in your cleats. Our Footwear Experts share why it’s important to break in your football cleats along with a simple process to make sure they’re ready for the upcoming season.

Why Break in Football Cleats?

New football cleats typically come stiff and rigid out of the box due to the materials they are made of. Failing to break them in before practice, especially the first game can lead to discomfort and pain that could continue throughout the season. By properly breaking in your football cleats, you allow them to mold to your feet, reducing the risk of blisters and ensuring optimal comfort and performance on the field.

Steps to Breaking in Football Cleats

1) Walk Around: Put your new football cleats on with a pair of football socks and wear them around the yard. This allows the uppers to soften and form properly around your feet. Don’t wear your cleats on pavement as this will damage the studs.

2) Perform Light Exercises: After a few times of walking around the yard in your football cleats, start adding in light exercises like jogging or skipping to help the upper adapt to lateral movement.

3) Apply Warm Water: If you’re looking to break in your football cleats faster, wet the uppers and outsole with warm water, put your cleats on while wearing your football socks, and wear them for up to 1 hour. Adding the water helps soften the materials and allow them to mold to your feet.

4) Increase Time: Gradually increase the duration of wearing your football cleats, starting with short or partial practices. Then, wearing them for the entire practice.

Following these suggestions for breaking in your football cleats will help prevent sore areas on your feet. If you have additional questions about preparing for football season, stop into your local ERLEBNISWELT-FLIEGENFISCHEN to speak with an Expert!
