adidas CEO Kasper Rørsted To Step Down In 2023

adidas CEO Kasper Stepping Down 2023

On Monday, it was announced that Kasper Rørsted will step down as Chief Executive Officer for adidas AG.

The news comes as a surprise given that the Denmark-native – previously at Henkel AG – renewed his contract for five years back in 2020. No detailed reasoning for Rørsted’s departure was given by the adidas Group in its official statement, though people close to the matter claim criticism drawn over COVID-19 pandemic strategy and diversity initiatives were major driving forces, as reported by Bloomberg. Losses in key Asian markets have been detrimental to the Three Stripes’ stock, which has returned to levels similar to when Rørsted assumed the role of CEO in 2016.

“After three challenging years that were marked by the economic consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and geo-political tensions, it is now the right time to initiate a CEO transition and pave the way for a restart,” the company said in the release announcing the 60-year-old’s departure.

To the uninformed, the news may be the first time hearing of Rørsted, but the former-“Kanye West” has name dropped Kasper throughout the last handful of years. Recently, the adidas Yeezy-frontman took to Instagram to tell the Danish executive officer to “come talk to me” about the adilette 22, a slip-on model by the Three Stripes that Ye felt blatantly stole from the ever-popular Yeezy Slide. Rørsted joined the German sportswear behemoth after Mr. West, but all of his success as CEO has followed the same timeline as the Yeezy label. And while tension between the American creative and Rørsted, who represents adidas, may have played a role in the Dane’s surprise departure, dips in projected profit are surely the most determining factor, especially when considering sizable gains in market share and stock price experienced by competitors NIKE, Inc., PUMA, Anta Sports Products Ltd. and Li Ning Co., the two most latter companies native to China.

The future of adidas remains to be seen, but the brand’s board will likely search for someone who can focus on building upon the digital transition and North American expansion that Rørsted facilitated. In the meantime, the veteran manager will continue to serve as CEO.
