Vans and Balmain in recent weeks | Purlicue Fattens Up Some Classic Vans For The “Year Of The Pig”

With the Year Of The Pig in the Chinese zodiac calendar upon us, seemingly every footwear brand is throwing their hat — or putting their foot — in the ring with special CNY releases. Some inspirations are intricate while some are more obvious, but few are as clever as Vans and Purlicue’s six-shoe “The Fat Year” collab, featuring two variations of the Vans Woven Patch Pocket t-shirt in dark grey, the Vans Era, and the Vans Baskets Old Skool LX kaki. Supersizing is the name of the game here, so each red-and-white shoe features a swath of enlarged details: the Old Skool boasts a sizeable checkered pattern on the lateral/medial sides of the upper and enormous interchangeable red-and-white jazz stripes, while the Era keeps things a touch more simple for those who aren’t looking to fully gorge themselves, condensing the giant checkerboard pattern to the tongue and throat. Both pairs also feature a massive Vans logo on the heel and come equipped with extra-wide red flat laces. Finishing touches are then provided by a black “The Fat Year” text hit on the outsole and a special pig graphic on the insole.
