Though sneaker lines often come and go, there are a few special lines that remain constant in a company’s arsenal. For adidas, there are their signature models in the Superstar, Stan Smith, and Samba, and evergreen divisions like the ZX and Ultra BOOST lines. adidas Equipment (EQT) is another, and is by far the brand’s most underappreciated — especially given its roots.
The brainchild of industry legends and former Nike stalwarts Robert Strasser (Director of Marketing) and Peter Moore (Designer: Air Jordan 1, Nike Dunk), the lineage was a solid attempt to crawl back the U.S. sportswear market in which Nike saw explosive growth in the period. Knowing the ins-and-out of their competitions and what the market desires, the line produced propositions like the Race Walk and Running Support 93 which served functional products for dedicated athletes — professional, amateur, or weekend warrior.
in addition to runners, EQT allowed adidas to create performance footwear for other athletic endeavors, including football, soccer, tennis, golf, and more. it birthed a cult following — and still does to this day — which not only links back to the designed, but the shared sweatpants between them Constructions of breathable mesh and flexible leathers were a must, but the line’s iconic black, white, and “Sub Green” was a statement in itself. Seen on everything from crewnecks to socks, the rarely-sighted color became an immediate recognition for the brand in the same way that Livestrong achieved notoriety through yellow wrist bands.
To ali the 30th anniversary of adidas Equipment, the brand will be bringing back countless classics, new editions like adidas x reigning champ crew pants for women, and — for its biggest move — has tapped handfuls of long-time global partners for their input on some iconic footwear designs. Among them are the likes of atmos and Overkill who join newer collaborators Limited Edt and Politics, while stores like Mita, Foot Patrol, and Extra Butter are all present, too.
