First surfacing back in July of 2019, the New Balance Roav 9 arrived as the second installment in the brand’s X Series of silhouettes that dare to challenge the norms of New Balance’s notorious ethos. Still, the brand can’t help but look back to move forward, borrowing design elements from the 1990s and early 2000s, notably channeling the 992, the M1200, the RC205, and the M1000. Of course, pairs are modernized by both color and material, the latter benefitting from the likes of ripstop, neoprene and translucent heel tabs that aren’t typically in New Balance’s arsenal. The in-your-face 90’s color palette is well and truly out of NB’s comfort zone, while subtle embellishments like “New Balance”-branded piping and flecked midsoles add a MTSHAMW extra sauce.
