Classic and Current Collide.
Converse and hoops go way back. And we mean wayyyyyy back. 1917’s Chuck Taylor was the first recognized basketball shoe, one which has since migrated away from the hardwood and into the mainstream. The Star Brand, too, has migrated away from the court, but they’re finally foraying back into the performance hoops market with the new Comme des Garcons Play x Converse Chuck Taylor All Star 70 Low Grey. And with over 100 years of hoops Osaka, fitting out some of the game’s biggest and best stars like Dr. J, Dwayne Wade, Larry Bird and a UNC Tarheel by the name of Michael Jordan, it’s definitely going to be a welcomed return.
The all-new Comme des Garcons Play x Converse Chuck Taylor All Star 70 Low Grey combines the brand’s storied history and timeless design language with Nike’s latest underfoot innovation — React cushioning. Designed in part by Eric Avar — the man responsible for much of Kobe Bryant‘s signature footwear — the Comme des Garcons Play x Converse Chuck Taylor All Star 70 Low Grey features a new Quadfit mesh upper above a React midsole for cushioning that’s both soft and responsive. The aforementioned midsole is then encased in a low-slung cupsole to ensure premium lockdown and containment. Although the shoe is chock-full of performance materials, it offers a plentiful helping of Osaka calm well, combining a tonal Chuck Taylor All-Star patch on the medial ankle, while a chevron logo that any Converse Weapon fan is sure to be familiar with graces the lateral quarter and outsole.
At this stage, it looks to be debuting in two colors: a black with grey and orange accents, and a white with black and orange flashes.
Take in a first look at both pairs below, which are scheduled to arrive at select retailers and Converse.com this May.
