Running a marathon is always an achievement, no matter how long it takes you to complete the distance. However, some marathon times are simply too fast to ignore, so we’ve rounded up the best performances the world has seen over 26.2 miles.
Below, you’ll find tables detailing several marathon superlatives:
- 10 These are the world’s fastest marathon runners

You’ll note that only marathon performances ‘on record-eligible courses’ have been included on our lists, which is why Eliud Kipchoge’s 1:59:40 marathon, set in Vienna in 2019, doesn’t feature. Although an extraordinary feat, this sub-2 time doesn’t count for record purposes because standard competition rules for pacing and fluids weren’t followed – it was, rather, a carefully-crafted experiment to test human limits. Similarly, times from the Boston Marathon cannot be included on our lists, because the race is held on a point-to-point course with a too-great net elevation drop.
What everyone's reading
What are the benefits of super shoes performers in history, which is why you’ll see a name only once. The third and fourth lists, showing the fastest performances in history, allow for runners to appear more than once. So, Eliud Kipchoge, for example, appears four times in the ‘10 fastest marathons’ list for men.
All tables are current as of 29 April 2025.
