All eyes were on Kenya’s Sebastian Sawe to set a new men’s marathon world record at the 2025 Berlin Marathon on Sunday 21 September – but it wasn’t to be. Although he did secure victory by a significant four-minute margin, as well as the fastest marathon time so far this year, Sawe was just one of over 48,000 runners who had to battle unseasonably hot conditions to make it to the finish line that day.
On the women’s side, Rosemary Wanjiru – also of Kenya – overcame the conditions and her competitors to break the tape by a much narrower margin of four seconds, while Marcel Hug and Manuela Schär won the wheelchair races to make it a Switzerland sweep. Another impressive run was performed by musician-turned-marathon great Harry Styles, who completed the race in 2:59:13 under the alias ‘Sted Sarandos’.
