Spectators from abroad will be barred from the rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games after the risk posed by the pandemic was deemed ‘too great’ by organisers.

In a statement, the Tokyo Olympics Organising Committee said, ‘In order to give clarity to ticket holders living overseas and to enable them to adjust their travel plans at this stage, the parties on the Japanese side have come to the conclusion that they will not be able to enter into Japan at the time of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.’

More than 600,000 tickets to the Olympic and Paralympic Games have been sold to spectators from outside Japan. Organisers have promised all will be refunded for the cost of their tickets. However, Toshiro Muto, the CEO of the Tokyo organising committee, made it clear they were not responsible for money lost on travel or hotel costs.
