Neither the Welsh Indoor Championships or the Welsh Cross Country Championships will take place this year, it has been announced.
Wales is currently in a Level 4 lockdown, with residents instructed to stay at home and not see anyone outside of their household or support bubbles. World Athletics has said that because of the lockdown restrictions, it is not safe for the running events to go ahead.
In a statement, the sport’s governing body acknowledged the news would be disappointing to athletes, saying, ‘Whilst we know this news will come as a disappointment for many athletes in Wales, we must once again prioritise the national effort to protect public health. Strict restrictions on numbers are likely to remain in place in Wales as we regress through the Alert Levels, but we certainly hope that a number of competition opportunities will be on offer as and when restrictions allow.
‘We fully appreciate the ongoing patience and support of the athletics community in Wales during these difficult times.’
