Former Comrades Marathons champion Nick Bester is recovering in the hospital after being attacked while running on a trail near his home in Magaliesberg, South Africa, on Sunday, August 30.
Also in the news, three men on the trail snuck up behind Bester and beat him with rocks. They then stripped off his clothes and bound his hands together behind his back. Bester suffered three broken ribs, a broken cheek bone, trauma to his head, and cuts all over his body.
Bester’s son, Shaun-Nick Bester, posted a picture on Instagram of the injuries. 'They took off his clothes and tied him up and left him in the mountain. He managed to escape down the mountain by sliding on his back until he was right against someone’s fence.'

Bester, who won the Comrades Marathon on an up-run year, also came in second twice on a down-run year. He also holds the eighth-fastest time among all men for an up run, which he set in 1996; he came in second behind Dmitri Grishin, who won the race that year.
