The IAAF has announced tougher entry standards and a new world ranking system will be used for the Tokyo Olympic Marathon in 2020.

During a two-day meeting in Doha, the IAAF council has approved the qualification system and entry standards for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The new dual qualifying system will combine the entry standards with the new world ranking system to determine whether athletes are eligible for the race.

Under the new qualification process, an athlete can qualify for the 2020 Olympics by running within the entry standard, or by using their IAAF world ranking position in the selected event. The process is designed to achieve 50 percent of the target numbers through entry standards and the remaining 50 percent through the IAAF world ranking system.
