25-year-old Scot Laura Muir broke Kirsty Wade’s 31-year-old British record for the indoor mile by more than five seconds at the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix.

Muir finished in four minutes, 18.75 seconds, breaking Wade’s mile record of 4:23.86.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Muir said: “I knew I was in great shape. It was about winning the race, but also running fast.

“I’m so chuffed to get the record on home soil. I knew the split halfway and knew I was there and thereabouts. The crowd were fantastic.”

Her time is the third fastest in history. Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba holds the record with a time of 4:13.31, followed by Romanian Doina Melinte, who ran 4:17.14.

Faith Kipyegon just misses the 3000m world record.
