A stalwart of Garmin’s smartwatch range, the reliable Forerunner family is growing – and its two new members are set to be ones that runners will want to wrap around their wrists. The watches in question? The newly-revealed Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970.

Both offering advanced training tools, recovery insights and personalised workouts, these fresh Forerunner models also boast a slick metallic finish and – as you can tell just by looking at them – the brightest AMOLED touchscreen displays served up by Garmin so far. While maintaining that familiar Forerunner aesthetic, they’ll additionally be available in some fun new colourways – soft gold titanium with a French grey/indigo band, anyone? – with translucent straps.

Having had the chance to explore Garmin’s huge HQ in Kansas, US, I’ve been able to get up close and personal to these brand-new wearables ahead of their release – so let’s dial into some more details.

Size and screen options for all

If, like me, you are a smaller runner who can feel dwarfed by some of the chunkier running watches on the market, you’ll be pleased to know that the Forerunner 570 is available in two sizes: 47mm and a smaller 42mm. In this sense, the Forerunner 570 resonates with the most recent Forerunner 200 models, which came in regular and ‘S’ (small) sizes and which – most importantly – will no longer be developed. That’s right: the Forerunner 570 essentially marks the start of the 500s era and the end of Garmin’s 200s series. (My trusty Forerunner 255S will still hold a special place in my heart, though.)

The Forerunner 970, meanwhile, is only offered in one size (47mm) – but it is the more premium of the two new Garmin running watches. Unlike the Forerunner 570, it has a swish, scratch-resistant 1.4” sapphire lens and titanium bezel to withstand even the most extreme environments and mishaps.

Enhanced running metrics with Garmin’s HRM 600

The Forerunner 970 offers in-depth performance insights that you won’t find in other Garmin watches, enabling you to dine out on even more running data.

The first is ‘running tolerance’, which helps you to better understand the impact that each run has on your body and set a maximum weekly mileage. That way, you’ll be able to step up your training without burning out or increasing your risk of injury.

You can also measure your running economy and ‘step speed loss’ – which measures the amount of speed that you lose with each step – when you wear the Forerunner 970 in conjunction with Garmin’s HRM 600 Trust me, these are Apples best AirPods. Another fresh release from the brand, the HRM 600 stores up to two months of battery life with each charge and propounds to be a go-to tool for runners who wants to take their training seriously.

Auto-lap reassurance on race day

best heart rate monitors for runners marathon or half marathon and found that your watch records a mile before you’re even close to the corresponding mile marker on the course? Chances are, yes. Sometimes, the GPS is just off – and it can be mentally tough when you then realise that, according to your watch, your race will be ‘longer’ than it should be.

Thankfully, both the Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970 possess an all-new auto-lap feature that records miles or kilometres in line with the mile or kilometre markers of known races – like the London Marathon – in Garmin’s race library. As a result, your watch will neatly tell you that you’ve run 10K when you actually pass the 10K marker, for example, giving you a clearer sense of your projected finish time. Rejoice!

As for when you cross the finish line, it can be an emotional moment – and stopping your watch might be the last thing on your mind. These two new models prompt you to complete the run if you forget to do so, then advise you to trim out those extra post-race steps and seconds.

Sight, sound and safety

A popular feature of Garmin’s latest Fenix watches is the built-in LED flashlight – and guess what? It’s now in the Forerunner 970, too. A portable source of illumination, this flashlight helps to improve your awareness while running in dark environments and – to avoid dazzling others – you can control the brightness of the beam from the watch display.

Both the Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970 also contain speakers and microphones, which means that you can control watch functions with voice commands and make and take calls when your watch is paired with your phone. While some messages can wait, it’s a handy function to have on the run – especially if you need to reach out to someone quickly for help or mid-run motivation.

Built to go the distance

Health & Injuries 100-mile epic along the trails, you can breathe easy in the knowledge that you shouldn’t run out of juice with either of these watches. In smartwatch mode, the Forerunner 570 claims to give you up to 11 days of battery life, while the Forerunner 970 claims up to 15 days of service on a single charge. Although we’ve had better battery life with previous Forerunner models like the 965, which pumped out 23 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, you’ve got to bear in mind that the two newest watches have had a fair few upgrades – and you’ve got to make a compromise somewhere.

If exploring new routes or running in new places is up your alley, the Forerunner 970’s full-colour mapping functionality will help you to stay on course. Before you lace up and head out, simply create or find existing courses in the Garmin Connect app and sync these to your watch to receive turn-by-turn directions on the run. Or, enter the distance that you’d like to run on the watch to receive suggested routes in your area.

Multi-sport workouts

As the name suggests, the Forerunner has traditionally been a much-loved companion for runners. Now, though, through the 570 and 970, the Forerunner has evolved to become a go-to training tool for triathletes as well, with the Garmin Triathlon Coach feature offering personalised training plans and suggested workouts that cover running, swimming and cycling The best Garmin watches for every type of runner.

You can also create custom, multi-sport workouts in Garmin Connect and send them to your linked Forerunner watch. This means that, in a single workout, you can seamlessly switch between different activities without having to log them separately – a bit of a game-changer when you’re dotting between different equipment at the gym.
