Sennheiser Sport True Wireless: Set-up and design

First up, the Sennheiser Sport are a serious pair of earbuds – their size is much chunkier than other earbuds and the charging case they come in is far from slimline too (testers described it as 'a mini bucket'. While this does make it difficult to store it in a running belt or pocket, it feels sturdy and there’s an added loop so you can attach it to a belt or strap instead.

The ergonomic fit of the earbuds is customisable. They come with a choice of six adapters, each in three sizes (S, M and L) and four different ear fins, so you should be able to keep them comfortably in place. Engineered to be durable, they are supposed to withstand the toughest workouts and are splash, dust and sweat resistant, too.

Because of their chunky design, the Sennheiser Sport have a strong feel in the ears and they’re not as featherlight as others. Each earbud weighs 6.8g (for context, the We earn a commission for products purchased through some links in this article weigh 5g each), so for those with smaller ears they may feel too heavy. However, I found this made them fit better and they've never once fallen out while running.

These Sennheiser earbuds don’t come charged, so you do need to get some juice into them before you can set them up. After that, though, pairing is wonderfully simple. I didn’t even need to press and hold the earbuds to pair them – a voice just said 'Pairing' when I inserted them in my ears and the earbuds showed up in my phone's Bluetooth settings. For added functionality, there’s an app you can download (more on that).

Sennheiser Sport True Wireless: Controls

The touch controls on the Sennheiser Sport are really intuitive and responsive. Single tap the left or right bud to pause your audio, double tap the left to go back a track, and double tap the right to skip to the next track. If you hold the left earbud you can volume down, and volume up on the right. You do need both buds in the ears for up and down volume control, though. To enable voice assistant, triple tap either bud. Overall, they're some of the easiest controls I've used and I've never had to resort to using my phone mid-run.

You can also download and use the Smart Control App to adjust the adaptable acoustics. The buds come with three closed ear adapters and three open ear adapters. The former allow you to eliminate distractions, and the latter help you to stay aware of your surroundings. Within the app, you can select which ones you’re using to enhance the acoustics.

The buds also come with voice assistant and calls. We did note some crackling on voice sound during phone calls, though.

Sennheiser Sport True Wireless: Battery life

Battery life on the Sennheiser Sport is decent and in line with most other running headphones on the market. On a single full charge (which takes around 90 minutes), they deliver nine hours of playback time and a further 18 hours with on-the-go charging via the case. If you’ve forgotten to charge them, a quick 10-minute charge will also provide 60 minutes of music playback, which is super handy.

Sennheiser Sport True Wireless: Sound quality

In our RW Lab sound tests, the Sennheiser Sport were the highest scoring earbuds and received top marks for their sound level before distortion, overall sound quality and bass.

'I always expect a lot from Sennheiser and these definitely lived up to expectations,' said our sound technician.

They feature a sports-optimised control and an Adaptable Acoustic feature, which offers the choice of either open or closed ear adapters that match with special EQ modes to provide the ideal setting for the choice of exercise. The open ear adapter style should provide low occlusion that allows you to stay aware of your surroundings while minimising body-borne noise, while the closed ear adapter style should provide passive noise cancellation and block outside sound for an immersive audio experience. There's no active noise cancellation if you want to fully immerse yourself in your music, though.

Overall, the earbuds provide a really enjoyable listening experience and there's very minimal sound leakage, so you can crank up the volume without worrying about other people listening in. If you're looking earbuds that are suitable for everyday listening and sports, these tick that box.

Sennheiser Sport True Wireless: RW verdict

Sennheiser's sport pedigree really shines with the Sport True Wireless earbuds. With three different sizes of ear adapters and four different sizes of fins, you get a customisable fit that stays firmly in place, mile after mile. The earbuds' impressive sound quality and minimal leakage makes these suitable for everyday listening and sports, while battery life is more than enough to see most runners through a week of training. Sure, you're not getting complete noise cancellation, but for a relatively affordable price point this seems a fair sacrifice.
